Job summary

Naka Power Utilities (NWT) invites applications for a Journeyperson Powerline Technician in Hay River, NWT. The role involves constructing, operating, and maintaining power lines and substations, with a focus on safety and quality.

You’ll lead teams, supervise contractors, and ensure reliable service to northern communities. Compensation includes a competitive salary and a comprehensive northern benefits package with relocation support, travel allowances, pension, and a strong emphasis on safety

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.
  • Eligible for Interprovincial Red Seal.
  • Experience or training with live line techniques using bare hand, sticks, and 25kV rubber gloves preferred.
  • Class 5 driver’s license; ability to obtain Class 1 or Class 3 license.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, operate, and maintain overhead and underground power lines, substations, and related equipment.
  • Install and maintain street lighting systems, adhering to quality and safety standards.
  • Execute system switching in line with Electrical Operations Standards.
  • Supervise contracted labor, ensuring compliance and quality.
  • Administer maintenance programs and inspections with thorough documentation.
  • Collaborate with electrical technicians for installation and maintenance.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot system faults and provide solutions.
  • Handle emergency response and standby duties.
  • Coordinate outages and execute switching orders precisely.
  • Respond to customer service requests promptly and professionally.
  • Participate in community relations activities.
  • Maintain and operate company vehicles and equipment responsibly.
  • Uphold safety and environmental regulations.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor apprentices and colleagues.

What You Bring:
  • Valid Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.

  • Valid or eligibility for Interprovincial Red Seal.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of live line techniques using bare hand, sticks, and 25kv rubber glove work achieved through live line training is preferred.

  • Valid Class 5 vehicle operator's license; ability to obtain Class 1 or Class 3 Operator's License.

  • Valid First Aid Certificate.

Hay River is a designated community and a comprehensive northern benefit package will be provided, including:
  • An additional 5.2% of base salary (northern allowance)

  • An additional $660 a month (northern allowance)

  • Additional 5 days’ vacation for North of 60 positions
