Job description

JOB SUMMARY :

The employee in this classification performs a variety of lineperson’s assignments involved in all aspects of installation, construction, troubleshooting, repair, specialized testing, maintenance, and ongoing inspection of overhead and underground distribution, transmission, switching station, substation, and streetlight facilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Maintain, inspect, install, and repair lines, substations, apparatus, and services, including overhead and underground lines and cables such as lead sheathed and oil-insulated cables.
  • Maintain, inspect, construct, install, and repair streetlight poles, units, relays, controls, ballasts, and lamps, including underground and overhead faults.
  • Perform live line work using appropriate methods.
  • Conduct inspections of transmission lines and switching facilities via low-level air and ground patrols to identify maintenance needs.
  • Diagnose line faults through inspections and testing.
  • Test electrical continuity and insulation of cables.
  • Perform phasing to verify line and transformer connections.
  • Investigate electrical interference issues and recommend solutions.
  • Assist in routing and high load moves.
  • Perform connection, disconnection, and collection procedures.
  • Interpret engineering plans, drawings, and standards for installation, modification, and repair.
  • Ensure quality in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Address customer complaints and recommend corrective actions.
  • Verify and test new equipment before commissioning.
  • Obtain permits and perform switching in accordance with safety codes.
  • Estimate materials for maintenance and improvements.
  • Investigate customer service requests and troubleshoot issues promptly.
  • Maintain buildings, yards, and substations.
  • Read meters as required.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment and tools.
  • Plan and execute preventive maintenance, maintaining records.
  • Develop switching procedures and ensure safety compliance.
  • Maintain records and drawings related to work performed.
  • Follow safety and environmental standards.
  • Participate in ongoing education and professional development.
  • Prepare cost estimates for projects.
  • Supervise apprentices and other staff, as needed.
  • Keep work areas clean and organized.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :

  • Interprovincial Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate or equivalent.
  • Ability to safely perform power line work at the journeyed level.
