Job summary

Valard Construction is seeking a Powerline Technician Apprentice to join our distribution team in the Kitchener/Waterloo, ON area. You will work with Journeypersons to gain hours toward certification, climb to install and repair lines, and maintain distribution facilities.

Candidates must reside locally, be willing to join the CUSW union, and be enrolled in the Ontario Apprenticeship program. A valid driver’s license and willingness to work various shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as a Powerline Technician Apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
• Must reside locally or within commuting distance and be willing to join union (CUSW)

Responsibilities

• Work with a Journeyperson Powerline Technician to gain hours toward Journeyperson Certificate
• Climb and work from heights and parallel to energized circuits
• Maintain poles, towers and guy wires
• Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution networks
• Open and close switches and install grounding devices to lines and equipment
• May climb poles or ride in bucket to install or repair wires and hardware on poles
• Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, pedestals and potheads
• Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment using hand tools and mechanical devices
• May cover energized lines with rubber goods for safe handling of high-voltage lines
• Use insulated poles and hot sticks for energized line work
• Be enrolled as a Powerline Technician Apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
• Possess Valid Driver's License and acceptable Drivers Abstract
• Willingness to work away from home and across shifts
• Knowledge of trade safety practices, procedures and safety requirements

Job description

Our Distribution group is currently seeking Powerline Technician Apprentices (PLT) to join our growing team, in the Kitchener / Waterloo, ON area.

Reporting to the Construction Foreman, PLT Apprentices work with Journeyperson Powerline Technicians to install and inspect electrical distribution facilities, drive and operate line trucks, operate associated equipment, and perform other miscellaneous duties as required. We are open to new Apprentices who are registered with an applicable Provincial Apprenticeship program as well as Apprentices Level One through Four who are looking to continue their journey towards their Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate.

Please Note: Candidates must reside locally or within a reasonable commuting distance. These projects will be for unionized worksites. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Work with a Journeyperson Powerline Technician and gain hours towards obtaining Journeyperson Certificate
• Climb and work from heights and parallel to energized circuits
• Maintain poles, towers and guy wires
• Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution networks
• Open and close switches and install grounding devices to lines and equipment
• May climb poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles
• Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals
• Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices
• May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service
• Use insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work

• Must be enrolled as a Powerline Technician Apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
• Valid Driver's License and ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract
• Willingness to work away from home and work a variety of shifts
• Knowledge of trade safety practices, procedures and safety requirements

This project will be a unionized worksite. Candidates must be willing to join Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW)

This position offers an hourly rate of $28.15 - $45.04 / hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
