About IESO

The Independent Electricity System Operator, or IESO, is a government agency in Ontario responsible for managing the province’s electricity system. It ensures that supply and demand for electricity are balanced in real time and that the power grid operates reliably and efficiently. The IESO also runs Ontario’s electricity market, where electricity is bought and sold, and helps plan for the province’s long-term energy needs. This includes forecasting electricity demand, acquiring new energy resources, and integrating renewable energy and emerging technologies into the grid. The organization works with a wide range of stakeholders, including utilities, energy companies, municipalities, and Indigenous communities, to support a reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity system. The IESO is headquartered in Toronto and plays a key role in shaping Ontario’s energy future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the reliable operation and maintenance of Ontario’s electricity grid by monitoring system performance and coordinating maintenance activities for transmission and generation assets.
  • Developing and implementing maintenance strategies and programs to ensure system availability and minimize disruptions.
  • Participating in operational planning, including load forecasting, contingency analysis, and resource adequacy assessments to maintain system reliability.
  • Collaborating with real-time operations, market participants, transmission operators, and planning teams to align operational and maintenance activities.
  • Analyzing system data and preparing reports to support decision-making and regulatory compliance.
  • Supporting outage coordination and restoration processes during planned and unplanned system events.
  • Ensuring compliance with NERC, NPCC, and Ontario-specific reliability standards and grid codes.
  • Utilizing specialized software tools for system monitoring, modeling, and analysis.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • 4–10 years of relevant experience in power system operations, maintenance, planning, or system studies
  • Experience working in a utility, system operator, or transmission organization (e.g., IESO, Hydro One)
  • Strong understanding of power system operations, grid reliability, and maintenance best practices
  • Familiarity with transmission and distribution infrastructure, asset management, and outage planning
  • Experience with power system analysis tools (e.g., PSS/E, EMS tools, SCADA, PI Historian)
  • Knowledge of NERC, NPCC, and Ontario-specific reliability standards and codes
  • Experience with outage coordination, contingency planning, or real-time support
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in grid modernization or renewable integration

Why It Pays to Be a Power Systems Analysis and Simulation Expert

  • Tackle complex, high-impact projects shaping Ontario’s future power landscape.
  • Influence rule changes, market design evolution, and wholesale operations.
  • Engage directly with regulators, stakeholders, and IESO leadership.
  • Enjoy a collaborative, mission-driven environment with hybrid work flexibility
