Job summary

Nova Scotia Power Inc. is seeking a Leading Power Plant Technician II (Industrial Electrician and Instrumentation Tech.) for Point Aconi, NS, on-site. You will direct maintenance, troubleshoot, calibrate and install instrumentation and electrical systems across the generating station.

Reporting to the Controls Supervisor, you will supervise a skilled team, perform planned maintenance, and support safety and environmental programs. Travel within the province may be required.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Instrumentation Controls Technology or Certificate as an Instrument Controls Technician from an accredited program.
  • PPTII recognition by Nova Scotia Power (Instrument Technician) or equivalent credentials.
  • Red Seal Journeyperson Instrument Controls Technician would be an asset.
  • Industrial Electrician Red Seal Certification is required.
  • 5 years' experience maintaining electrical and instrumentation equipment in power generation or similar.
  • Strong problem solving and ability to adapt to schedule changes.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada subject to checks.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and perform troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning on electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Develop knowledge of electrical equipment operation, PLCs and solid-state relaying.
  • Perform monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance checks and assist with outages.
  • Lead a skilled work team and may assume supervisor duties as needed.
  • Promote safety, environmental awareness, teamwork and efficiency.
  • Support work planning and continuous improvement activities.
  • May travel throughout the province to assist other locations.
  • Ensure plant operates safely per Operating Practices and Health & Safety rules.
  • Assist with Environmental Management System data and ISO 14001 initiatives.
  • Participate in regulatory training and on-the-job training.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires compliance with alcohol/drug policy.

Job Description

We are currently looking for a Leading Power Plant Technician II (Industrial Electrician and Instrumentation Tech.) to join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for directing and performing routine maintenance, trouble shooting, calibration and installation of instrumentation and monitoring equipment and all electrical equipment throughout the generating station at our Point Aconi location.

Key responsibilities
  • Directing and performing troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning on electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of the purpose and operation of all electrical equipment, including PLC's and solid-state relaying.
  • Perform monthly, semi-annual, annual maintenance checks, and assist with equipment overhauls and outages.
  • Assist and support the supervisor with leading and directing a highly skilled work team on a daily basis and may be assigned acting duties of the supervisor in his/her absence from time to time.
  • Promote safety, environmental awareness, teamwork, and work efficiency.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and support all aspects of the work planning process.
  • May be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • Ensure the plant operates safely, as prescribed in Nova Scotia Power Inc. Operating Practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations, and within the environmental stipulations prescribed in the Environmental Operating Permit.
  • Assist the Controls Supervisor with due-diligence activities, data compilation, and reporting related to the plant's Environmental Management System and environmental performance as it is related to the ISO 14001 processes and initiatives.
  • Participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • Responsible for personal safety and that of co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. This position is a safety sensitive position.
  • Comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy, requiring a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.
Qualifications
  • Candidate must either be a full-time employee recognized as a PPTII (Instrument Technician) by Nova Scotia Power or possess a Diploma in Instrumentation Controls Technology or a Certificate as an Instrument Controls Technician from an accredited program.
  • A Red Seal Journeyperson Instrument Controls Technician would be an asset.
  • Must have an Industrial Electrician Red Seal Person Certification.
  • Must have 5 years' experience maintaining electrical equipment and instrumentation equipment as found in a generating station or similar industry.
  • Must have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • Other competencies and skills as listed.
  • Eligibility for legal work in Canada, subject to right-to-work checks and background screening.
