Successful external applicants may be eligible for a one-time Signing Bonus of $5,000. A Return of Service will be required for an 18-month period.

The Opportunity

The IWK Health Centre, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is an internationally recognized academic health sciences centre dedicated to patient care, research, and education. We serve a population of two million across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland & Labrador. As a provincial health authority, we aim for world-class outcomes.

The Facilities & Environmental Services Department manages 24/7 maintenance and operations of all building and clinical infrastructure, including off-site locations, service areas, parking, helideck, and properties.

Position: Power Engineer

The Power Engineer operates, inspects, maintains, records data, and performs minor repairs on HVAC systems, steam systems, emergency power, containment lab mechanical systems, medical gases, and fire suppression systems. The role includes startup and shutdown of these systems. As a Third Class regulated plant, continuous supervision by a licensed Power Engineer is required.

Hours of Work

Monday - Friday and weekends, 7.5-hour shifts or 11.25-hour shifts (7:00 am - 7:00 pm / 7:00 pm - 7:00 am)

Your Qualifications

  • Minimum grade 12 or GED
  • Interprovincial Fourth-Class Power Engineer License (including Second Class Refrigeration License)
  • Three (3) years' experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Strong problem-solving and emergency response skills
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, diagrams, blueprints, manuals
  • Color vision, Occupational Health and Safety knowledge, safety awareness
  • Knowledge of building systems (Siemens/Johnson Controls), auxiliary software (Megamation, Fireworks, Swisslog), hydronics, water treatment
  • Strong safety practices, calmness under stress, proactive attitude
  • Additional language skills are an asset
