Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program - Financial Accounting Standards Board

The Financial Accounting Standards Board sponsors a postgraduate technical assistant program for individuals planning a career emphasizing accounting. This one-year program involves the FASB XBRL Postgraduate Technical Assistant (PTA) in Taxonomy development for digital financial reporting under US GAAP. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the standards-setting process and the roles of preparers, auditors, and users of financial information.

Position Responsibilities:
  1. Technical Research and Analysis:
  • Assist project managers with research projects related to:
  • Taxonomy structured data modeling for Accounting Standards Updates and the Accounting Standards Codification topics
  • XBRL standards post-implementation reviews
  • Data requests supporting standards-setting and implementation
  • Taxonomy elements' references to the Codification
  • Perform quality control reviews on Taxonomy updates and guides
  • Engage with the Taxonomy Advisory Group (TAG)
  • Understand and apply accounting standards
  • Collect and analyze financial reporting data from public companies
  • Analyze technical accounting issues and draft memorandums
  • Present findings and address feedback in TAG meetings
  1. Planning and Completion of Work:
  • Complete tasks within deadlines and notify supervisors of delays
  • Adhere to project management policies and procedures
  1. Communications:
  • Participate in small group and Board meetings
  • Respond to technical inquiries from external constituents
  • Present program information to college accounting classes
  1. Other Accountabilities:
  • Provide feedback on candidate selection
  • Assist HR with interview scheduling
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Strong project management and time management skills
  • Technical knowledge in accounting and analytical skills
  • Recent graduation or about to graduate with a master's in accounting or a double major
  • Outstanding academic record and thorough coursework in accounting theory and practice
  • Interest in accounting theory, critical thinking, and creativity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially writing
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other software
  • Teamwork, maturity, motivation, and leadership qualities
  • Interest in financial reporting
  • Experience through internships in accounting, assurance, or auditing is preferred
