The Opportunity
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, in partnership with ANSTO (Australia), Imperial College London (UK), and Tokamak Energy (UK), is launching a groundbreaking research program focused on developing new materials for compact tokamak reactors. We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team and contribute to this initiative. Working closely with materials modelling experts, you will have a primary role in planning experimental materials testing, characterisation, and subsequent design synthesis leading to improved materials performance.
The role will give you access to cutting-edge facilities at UNSW and ANSTO, including the OPAL Research Reactor. International facilities will also provide opportunities for ion irradiation studies and in-situ testing. The broader goals of the research include the development of improved materials for modular and compact fusion reactors, fundamental insight into neutron and ion irradiation damage, and development of Australia’s capabilities and facilities for nuclear materials research.
This is a highly collaborative role where you will work seamlessly with research groups at both UNSW and ANSTO, manage your time and responsibilities, and cultivate productive relationships at both locations with a wide range of stakeholders. This will be one of a potential six postdoc hires in the research group for 2025. At ANSTO, you will have the opportunity to work closely with both the Nuclear Materials Research and Technology Group and the Nuclear Analysis Section of Reactor Operations. At UNSW, you will become part of a vibrant materials research community within in the School of Mechanical and manufacturing Engineering, and the UNSW Nuclear Innovation Centre.
This position is best suited for candidates with a strong background in materials characterisation, structural integrity, nuclear materials and / or radiation damage research.
The role reports to Associate Professor Edward Obbard and has no direct reports.
