The primary focus of this postdoctoral fellowship is the development of a bidirectional wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EVs) and its seamless integration with microgrids. Responsibilities

This postdoctoral position will be based within a research group led by Professor Sheldon Williamson, an expert in power electronics and electric transportation systems. The successful candidate will assume a lead technical and supervisory role, overseeing the design, implementation, and validation of high-efficiency power converters used in wireless charging, as well as the integration of these systems into microgrids. Key responsibilities include :

Leading the design, modeling, simulation, and control development of bidirectional power electronic converters, such as inverters, active rectifiers, and PFC rectifiers for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications.

Developing, building, and testing converter hardware prototypes, and implementing control algorithms on real-time platforms (DSPs, microcontrollers, FPGAs).

Designing custom PCBs for power and control circuits, ensuring robust layout practices for high-frequency and high-power operation.

Utilizing industry-standard simulation tools (MATLAB / Simulink, PLECS, PSIM) for system validation prior to hardware implementation.

Addressing challenges related to integrating wireless charging systems into the power grid, including power quality, synchronization, protection, and safety compliance.

Mentoring and guiding a team of graduate students, providing technical direction, project planning, and hands-on support.

Preparing technical reports, journal / conference papers, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Collaborating with faculty, researchers, and industry partners to align development efforts with project goals.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or Control. The ideal candidate will demonstrate :

A solid foundation in power electronics and control systems, with proven expertise in converter-level hardware development.

Proficiency in the design, modeling, and control of power converters, including resonant converters, inverters, and rectifiers.

Hands-on experience in hardware implementation of control logic using DSPs, FPGAs, or microcontrollers.

Strong PCB design skills, including knowledge of high-power layout practices, gate drive design, thermal considerations, and noise mitigation.

Proficiency in simulation and modeling tools (MATLAB / Simulink, PLECS, PSIM, LTspice, Altium / KiCad).

Effective leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide a small technical team.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred qualifications include experience with WPT systems and EV charging, knowledge of bidirectional converter operation and grid-connected systems (V2G), familiarity with EMI / EMC design practices and compliance testing, understanding of WPT standards and safety protocols, and a track record of high-quality publications or contributions to funded research projects.
