Job description

The 2SLGBTQ+ Poverty in Canada Project is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in this national study, already in progress. The position is funded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)’s Partnership Grant. This study seeks to determine how poverty is impacting 2SLGBTQ+ people and to what extent. The lack of a national scale study of poverty and income inadequacy among 2SLGBTQ+ people hinders the development of effective policy measures, non-profit service provision, and scholarship. Our cross-disciplinary team, comprised of scholars and community partners is the first to examine the prevalence of poverty in 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and the impacts of this poverty on their social wellbeing, health, and socioeconomic empowerment. In this study, we are using methods such as focus groups, interviews, and a large-scale national survey. We aim to rectify 2SLGBTQ+ invisibility in mainstream anti-poverty work by developing a cross-sectoral community-based action plan to reduce 2SLGBTQ+ poverty in Canada.

The Postdoctoral Fellow’s tasks include:

  • Supervising 4 Research Assistants (e.g., undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral students). This may include recruitment, interviews, and hiring
  • Supervising 6 Peer Researchers conducting interviews and focus groups across Canada
  • Participating in all team meetings and maintaining regular communication with team members and community partners
  • Chairing and organizing meetings
  • Organizing and leading community consultations and other project-related events
  • Engaging in quantitative research with the Project’s Quantitative Working group
  • Assisting with knowledge mobilization
  • Supporting publication and dissemination workplans
  • Conducting primary and secondary literature reviews,
  • Contributing to research design, data gathering, analysis, publications, and presentations
  • Conduct scoping of existing anti-poverty policies in Canada applying a queer lens
  • Producing the project’s eNewsletter
  • Collaborating with the Project Manager on tasks approved by the postdoctoral supervisor

This position reports to Dr. Margaret Robinson (Mi’kmaq; Lennox Island FN), Tier 2 Canada research Chair in Reconciliation, Gender, and Identity at Dalhousie University.
