Detailed Overview

The Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for performing polysomnograms for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep/arousal disorders. Duties include receiving requisitions, preparing patients, monitoring and recording physiologic data during sleep, entering data into a computerized database, conducting various tests involving non-invasive techniques, and formulating technical reports for medical staff interpretation.

Responsibilities
  1. Receives and prepares patients for polysomnographic studies, including reviewing requisitions, assessing case history, explaining procedures, and monitoring patient comfort.
  2. Conducts tests such as electroencephalography, electrooculography, electromyography, electrocardiography, and respiratory tracings, operating monitoring devices, calibrating equipment, and ensuring data accuracy.
  3. Monitors patients during studies, responding to emergencies as needed, and initiating CPR if necessary.
  4. Prepares preliminary reports analyzing recordings to identify dysfunctions, and forwards reports to physicians for diagnosis.
  5. Maintains and tests laboratory equipment, calibrates and cleans devices, and reports malfunctions.
  6. Participates in quality control programs, troubleshooting technical issues to ensure service quality.
  7. Maintains records, enters data, and generates reports, analyzing trends and variances.
  8. Guides and monitors clinical experience of new staff and students, demonstrating procedures and interpretation skills.
  9. Participates in team activities, meetings, and quality improvement initiatives, and reports unsafe practices.
  10. Engages in interdisciplinary research and special projects, collecting data and providing updates.
  11. Sets goals aligned with organizational values, maintains professional development, and reviews progress.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Diploma in Respiratory Therapy or Electroneurophysiology Technology from an accredited institution. One year of recent related experience or equivalent. Eligible for registration with the BRPT. Current CPR certification.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of polysomnographic theory and practice, including non-invasive techniques.
  • Understanding of sleep-related physiological changes across body systems.
  • Skill in interpreting various physiological recordings and intervening appropriately.
  • Proficiency in operating monitoring equipment and ventilator support devices.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, operate computers, and perform CPR techniques.
  • Physical ability to perform duties.
