Job summary

The Government of Alberta's Forestry Division is seeking a Policy Analyst to advance forestry policy, legislation, and intergovernmental initiatives across the province.

You will research complex policy issues, prepare briefing notes, coordinate projects, and collaborate with ministries and partners to implement strategic recommendations.

Qualifications

As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for fostering Alberta’s environmentally responsible forest management practices, including management of wildfires. We preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

Reporting within the Strategy, Policy and Economics Branch, this position provides policy analysis, project coordination, and intergovernmental support to Forestry Division initiatives. Acting as a key link between forestry subject matter experts, policy professionals, legislative planners, and government partners, the role helps ensure policies, programs, and strategic initiatives are developed and implemented effectively and in alignment with Government of Alberta priorities.

In this role, you will research and analyze complex forestry policy issues, monitor emerging trends and developments, and contribute to the development of strategic advice and recommendations for senior leadership. You will prepare briefings, reports, and decision documents that support informed decision-making on matters with provincial, national, and occasionally international significance.

The position also supports Alberta's participation in federal, provincial, and territorial initiatives by coordinating information, facilitating collaboration across ministries and jurisdictions, and contributing to the development of provincial positions and responses. Working closely with a diverse range of internal and external partners, you will help advance policy and legislative priorities while ensuring forestry perspectives are reflected in broader government initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
A degree in a related field such as public policy, social sciences, public admin, or natural resources plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience or;
equivalent as described below.

Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

• Knowledge of forestry, natural resource management, environmental policy, or related government programs.
• Experience working within a government, public sector, or intergovernmental environment.
• Familiarity with Alberta government decision-making, legislative, and policy development processes.
• Experience supporting federal, provincial, and territorial committees, councils, or collaborative initiatives.
• Certification or training in project management methodologies and tools.

Notes

This is a temporary position with an estimated end date of March 31, 2027. Regular work hours are 7.25 hours a day and 36.25 hours a week. Occasional travel throughout the province or work outside of regular hours may be required.

Candidates may be required to complete a written assignment as part of the interview process.
