This is skilled plumbing work requiring employment of standard trade practices on a variety of plumbing installations.

Accountabilities:

  • Install and perform maintenance water meters, on all City owned property such as Administration, Housing, Depot, Landfill, Parks and Recreation, Fire and Pumping Stations.
  • Perform necessary plumbing work involved in the winterizing and DE winterizing plumbing system in City owned facilities.
  • Repair and install as required in City owned facilities.
  • Assist the City's Water Works Department in performing plumbing repairs and in the installation of water lines.
  • Become knowledgeable of the City of St. John’s Plumbing By-Laws.

The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work.

Qualifications

Education – High School Diploma, registered as an Apprentice in the above noted trades. Preference will be given to applicants in the fourth year of the Apprenticeship Program; however, applicants at earlier levels may also be considered.

A Foreign Diploma Or Certificate Equal To The Applicable Canadian Credential Will Also Be Considered With The Following Documentation:

  • An educational credential assessment (ECA) report from a recognized organization to show your credential is valid and equal to a Canadian credential. If you already have an ECA report, it must be less than 5 years old.
  • Language testing – Must have taken the approved language testing for Atlantic Immigration Program which is less than 2 years old and meets the level the program requires.
  • Valid work permit or other authorization to legally work in Canada.

Specific Skills/Certifications –

  • Self-motivated to work effectively with very limited supervision.
  • Strong communication skills to liaise with City Departments.
  • Exceptional operation skills of a computer terminal.
  • Addresses people in a tactful, diplomatic manner.

Other –

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will primarily be indoors; however, it does require travel to various job sites, including residential, commercial, and industrial locations. This means that there may be occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Frequently interacting with clients, contractors, other tradespeople, and supervisors on-site.
  • Exposure to confined spaces, heights, and potentially hazardous materials is possible, requiring adherence to safety protocols.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light to moderate physical effort can be expected infrequently when assisting with or conducting plumbing repairs or installations.
  • Must have finger dexterity and grasping ability to operate plumbing tools, equipment, or a computer.
  • Normal physical effort is required daily for movement around job sites and the workplace.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, and handling of plumbing equipment and materials.
  • Ability to stand, crouch, and kneel for extended periods.

Hours of Work:

40 hours per week. Shift Work as required.

Hourly rate for Journeyperson Plumber is $40.27 per hour.

Apprentice compensation is based on percentage of the Journeyperson rate, as outlined below:

4th year apprentice – 90% of Journeyperson rate

3rd year apprentice – 80% of Journeyperson rate

2nd year apprentice – 70% of Journeyperson rate

1st year apprentice - 60% of Journeyperson rate
