Job summary

JNE Consulting in Hamilton, ON, is seeking an Automation Engineer to join the Automation Team. The role focuses on control systems, instrumentation, and safety systems, with responsibilities spanning design, programming, and commissioning.

The candidate will lead projects in a multidisciplinary setting, ensuring compliance with standards and safety requirements, while delivering on time and within budget. A strong background in PLC/DCS/SCADA/HMI and Rockwell/Siemens is essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of related industry experience.
  • University degree or college diploma in a related field.
  • Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and configure PLC programs and other automation devices, including HMIs, drives, switches, and analyzers, in accordance with design documents and functional descriptions.
  • Develop control system panel designs and drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Apply approved specifications and standards to produce complete control system drawing packages.
  • Review and stamp control system drawings in accordance with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) requirements.
  • Lead the installation, commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Specify equipment and perform control system, instrumentation, and safety system design.
  • Develop specifications and standards in accordance with applicable legislation, industry standards, and plant requirements.
  • Deliver projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Coordinate projects and execute designs with minimal guidance in a multidisciplinary environment.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will provide technical and project leadership in Control Systems, Instrumentation, and Safety Instrumented Systems.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Automation Engineer will be responsible for control system design and programming, equipment specification, drawing development and review, and project execution—from initial design through installation, commissioning, and start-up.

This role will also provide engineering oversight and technical support to ensure control system designs comply with applicable specifications, standards, legislation, and plant requirements.

Job Requirements
  • Expert-level knowledge and understanding of control systems, including PLC, DCS, SCADA, HMI, and drives.
  • Expert-level programming and software development skills involving multiple PLC platforms, including Rockwell and Siemens.
  • Advanced knowledge of instrumentation, combustion, and safety systems.
  • Advanced instrumentation design skills.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Minimum of 10 years of related industry experience.
  • University degree or college diploma in a related field.
  • Ontario Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence.
Strong Assets
  • Design and commissioning experience with variable-speed AC and DC drives.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial networking and Operational Technology (OT), including cybersecurity.
  • SQL database experience.
  • TÜV Rheinland certification.
Compensation

Base salary: $90,000–$120,000 CAD annually, based on experience and qualifications.
