Reporting into TD Place Operations, the Playing Surfaces Technician is responsible for preparing, grooming, painting, resurfacing, edging and other ongoing ice (arena) and turf (stadium) maintenance during, before and after games and events.
What you’ll do:
- Daily set-up and maintenance of ice surface and field turf;
- Ensure ice is resurfaced according to facility schedules and standards, complete minor repairs on ice surface, dasher boards, safety shields, and all other equipment;
- Ensure the assembly and disassembly of the facility are properly executed in conjunction with programs and events;
- Coordinate all aspects of turf maintenance activities including preparing and maintaining up-to-date work records;
- Develop and carry out practices for artificial turf;
- Troubleshoot and repair artificial turf systems;
- Ensure that all lines and logos are properly painted;
- Develop resurfacing plans based on event requirements and ensures completion of tasks in tight timeframes;
- Document damage or required equipment repairs;
- Troubleshoot minor repairs;
- Conduct monthly safety meetings with department staff, and complete appropriate documentation for submission to management;
- Ensure attention to detail meets standards required by the facility, tenants and customers;
- Other duties as assigned by management.
What’s needed:
- Two (2) cumulative years of work experience in ice making and/or driving a Zamboni;
- Two (2) cumulative years of work experience in turf management (additional experience using painting machinery is preferred);
- Valid G Driver’s License;
- Ability to carry out sustained physical labour, stand for long periods of time, work with tools, and lift objects up to 50lbs;
- Demonstrate familiarity with tools and maintenance equipment;
- Ability to work with limited supervision and as a team member;
- Ability to work varied schedule including days, evenings, overnights and weekends.
Working Conditions:
- Work requires significant physical effort, walking (including stairs), and lifting heavy weights;
- Work requires utilizing tools and equipment that could cause physical injury if not handled and operated following safety practices and procedures;
- Required to follow WHMIS and provincial Health and Safety requirements;
- This is a unionized position and subject to the terms of a Collective Agreement with the Ottawa-Carleton Public Employees Union, Local 503.
