Job description

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Districts Plant Operator, the incumbent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the electrical generating units, plants, and their respective auxiliary equipment. The role may also include performing maintenance on generating equipment, as well as general building and site maintenance as required. While on duty, this position acts as the Operator in Charge and is responsible for overseeing contractors on site.

Most duties are performed independently as this position is primarily based out of a remote plant with support staff not readily available.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • 1. Safety and Compliance
  • Adheres to the Corporation’s safety standards by following approved Safe Work Practices and both Worker- and Operator-Administered Protection Plans.
  • Ensures hazardous materials are handled and stored in compliance with WHMIS and MSDS regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality and complies with all corporate policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Plant Operations
  • Operates and monitors prime movers (including rental units) and auxiliary equipment in accordance with operational requirements.
  • Starts, stops, and synchronizes equipment; logs operational data; enters information into the EAM system; and reports any deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Manages seasonal transitions for plant systems and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Inspections and Monitoring
  • Conducts daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and readings on plant and rental generators and associated equipment.
  • Monitors building heating, ventilation, and environmental systems.
  • Performs regular site security checks.
  • Equipment Isolation and System Support
  • De-energizes, isolates, re-energizes, and returns plant equipment and auxiliary systems to service in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists with system restoration and troubleshooting after disturbances and conducts line patrols as required.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Performs or assists with maintenance and repair of generating units, auxiliary systems, infrastructure, and yard equipment.
  • Supports root cause troubleshooting to minimize downtime and ensure equipment reliability.
  • Contractor and Staff Oversight
  • Coordinates and oversees contractors for operational support activities including building and yard maintenance, spill response, remediation, snow removal, and waste management.
  • Supervises casual diesel plant operators and ensures safe and effective work practices are followed.
  • Inventory and Materials Management
  • Manages plant inventory, including ordering, receiving, and tracking parts and supplies.
  • Maintains accurate inventory records to support plant operations.
  • Operational Support and Data Collection
  • Assists with or performs month-end plant readings and meter readings as required.
  • Conducts plant tours for staff and visitors, as needed.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Acts as the initial site contact and lead during emergency situations.
  • Reviews and maintains familiarity with Emergency Preparedness Plans and actively participates in emergency response exercises.
  • Other Duties
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support plant operations and overall organizational effectiveness.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works in proximity to high voltage, spinning equipment, confined spaces and pressure vessels. Exposure to the plant environment. Travel and periods of immediate stand-by coverage are the requirements of this position. Works a rotating shift schedule that may require working on weekends and statutory holidays. Will be exposed to inclement weather while working outside and when traveling.

Education/Training

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge at the grade 12 level plus some vocational training in light maintenance and operation of electrical generation equipment
  • WHIMIS and TDG training
  • Fall Arrest training
  • A valid First Aid certificate.

Experience

  • Several years of previous related work experience.
  • Preference for relevant trade experience
  • Proven history of operating electrical generation equipment
