What role you will play in our team

A Plant Operator opportunity is available at Imperial's Cold Lake, Alberta location. The city of Cold Lake is located in the western Canadian province of Alberta. It is approximately 294 km (180 miles) northeast of Edmonton, 170 km (100 miles) north of Lloydminster, and 588 km (375 miles) northeast of Calgary. The area offers all major amenities without crowds and traffic, world class recreational facilities and numerous types of outdoor activities. This is NOT a fly in/out opportunity and camp is not provided. Relocation to the Cold Lake area is required.

As an initial assignment you will train as a member of our operating staff to gain practical hands-on experience with operating and safety procedures. On-the-job experience will be supplemented with additional related formal training. You will work in a heavy oil plant environment and you will be required to work on your own without direct supervision following the initial training period.

Following your initial assignments and after becoming competent in all areas and reaching career level, you may have the opportunity to move into more technical roles such as Control Room Operator, Shift Engineer, Plant Shift Supervisor, Operations Specialist or Safety/Health/Environment Lead.

What you will do

  • Understanding and abiding by all safety rules and standards, reporting hazards and holding responsibility for the safe operation of your assigned facilities, tools and company vehicles
  • Understanding and abiding by applicable government regulations, e.g. Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Participating in safety programs and attending training sessions; completing self-development courses
  • Operating process, water reuse and steam units including process equipment, steam generators, water treatment facilities, compressors, pumps, treaters and utilities
  • Making process changes to ensure quality control of end products
  • Work in a crew environment to manage activities involved with field gate, all plant units or sulphur recovery operations
  • Participating as a team member to identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities within the facility
  • Surveillance of equipment such as compressors, pumps, treaters, etc.
  • Safely performing physical tasks at times, e.g. moving drums of chemicals, lifting, climbing ladders
  • Performing minor maintenance and plant housekeeping


About you

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Completion of Power Engineering Technology diploma
  • Demonstrated progress on an ABSA 3rd class certificate


Preferred Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Must have a driver's license and be comfortable to drive a pick-up truck
  • Assignment will involve working rotating 12-hour shifts involving inside and outside work
