Overview
Reporting to the Cement Vice-President, the Plant Manager is responsible to provide leadership and direction to the Brookfield manufacturing facility and quarry, to accomplish goals and objectives of the plant and quarry and to maintain a permanent effort towards increasing efficiency and productivity. The Plant Manager is responsible to develop and maintain high plant and quarry performance standards in safety, maintenance, sustainable industrial excellence, effective environmental stewardship, people development & mobilization, customer relations, budget planning and control.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environment Leadership
Drive the safety culture of Lafarge at the plant / quarry by enforcing safety policies, taking ownership for ensuring a safe workplace, and demonstrating support to organizational safety initiatives.
Achieve safety and environmental goals that establish the plant / quarry as a benchmark or “best practice” for health, safety and environmental measures of excellence.
Active leadership, participation and support of plant / quarry safety and environmental / wildlife committees or improvement teams.
Ensure all employees at the plant / quarry are properly trained and developed in regards to health, safety & environment.
Ensure that local laws and regulations pertaining to the activities of the operations are respected and the environment is protected as per the Group standards.
Operational Management
Direct and manage overall plant / quarry operations for production, maintenance, quality, engineering and community relations.
Coordinate plant / quarry activities through the planning with departmental managers to ensure that all manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost effective manner.
Ensure the execution of production programs according to schedule, quality standards and forecasted expenses, in order to satisfy sales needs, by coordinating activities of the plant / quarry and without compromising the future of the operations.
Contribute to the minimization of our production costs through studies, tests and technical or organizational modifications, which allow a decrease of our fixed and variable costs without prejudice or equipment damage.
Responsible for the quality of the products, in accordance with international standards and marketing objectives, and the respect of environmental standards, in accordance with regulations and our operating permits and approvals.
Establish and monitor overall plant / quarry performance for production and quality standards.
Ensure that plant / quarry equipment and property are maintained in good condition to ensure compliance with government regulations and to ensure effective and efficient operations.
Maintain existing plant / quarry facilities and equipment; replace, or make adjustments to plant and quarry facilities and equipment when necessary.
Develop and control activities to fulfill yearly budget and long term plans while managing capital assets efficiently and maintaining control of fixed costs.
Implement cost effective systems of control over capital, operating expenditures, manpower, wages and salaries.
Coordinate activities regarding major contracts such as natural gas, power, raw materials and solid fuels.
Direct actions to achieve / exceed KPI targets as well as other established KPI’s regarding operational excellence.
Recommend and implement investments within budget, time and quality standards required for a satisfying operation
Community & Customer Relations
Represent the company and / or plant / quarry in an ambassador style role to local community groups as well as regulatory agencies for local, provincial and the Federal government groups. The incumbent will be the face of Lafarge as a senior leader within the Canadian Maritime Provinces.
Participate and provide leadership to community groups / associations as well as civic and business organizations to enhance the image of Lafarge and to communicate the plant and quarry’s contributions to the local community.
Talent & Team Management
Lead, manages and mentors plant / quarry leadership team, supervisors and other key roles within the plant and quarry.
Provide leadership, guidance and training across the plant and quarry to accomplish goals and objectives. Specific focus on performance improvement, asset optimization, and making people successful.
Manages key relationships with the union and is heavily involved in setting the labor relations strategy and in the negotiation and ongoing management of the collective agreement.
Provide resources and support for knowledge, skill and behavioral development that improves the effectiveness of the plant / quarry’s human capital.
Prepare the “People for Tomorrow” and the plant / quarry talent review; establish robust succession plan and ensure the development of talent within the plant and quarry
Internal Relationship Management
Manage plant / quarry relationship with area sales force so that a direct link to customer feedback, suggestions and requests are maintained.
Partner with area sales management to ensure production plans and sales forecasts are coordinated as well as site visits for customer groups.
Work closely with distribution team to ensure delivery is on time, in full and invoiced correctly.
Actively participate with the broader cement management / leadership team
Visit customer base with Sales and other product Lines to ensure good understanding of customer needs and opportunities.
Actively lead the ‘Advanced’ team, the monthly coordination group between plant, sales and logistics.
Relationships with Others’ Jobs :
Close interaction with the rest of the senior management team of Cement including local leadership of Albany and Cement Cartage as well as the Atlantic sales team.
Close interaction with peers in Eastern Canada and in Cement Industrial Performance support team
Work in conjunction with counterparts in other product lines in Eastern Canada
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience
Technical undergraduate degree with a preference for Science and Engineering backgrounds
Experience in managing plants and quarries is desired along with management within a unionized environment.
Operational experience required with direct management of employees
Cement manufacturing experience desired (technical, process & project management knowledge)
10+ years industrial experience of increasing responsibility
Knowledge and Skills :
Knowledge of cement industry dynamics (marketing, sales, distribution)
Strong leadership and management skills

Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
Experienced people manager, coach and leader (indirect / direct reports, internal / external)
