Job description

Our client, a company at the forefront of innovation in the agricultural sector, is seeking an experienced Plant Director for its production center on the South Shore of Montreal. This role is crucial for optimizing daily operations and developing strategies to improve the overall performance of the center, with a focus on efficiency, profitability, and productivity, while adhering to the highest quality and safety standards. This is not a typical 9-to-5 position; the successful candidate must be available outside regular hours, including evenings and weekends, to respond to unforeseen events. This position requires an individual capable of leading and developing a team of professional managers in a manufacturing-like environment.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities in this Plant Director role :

Operational Excellence : Focused on continuous improvement, waste elimination, process optimization, and cost reduction by leveraging lean production principles.

Leadership and Personnel Management : Coach, motivate, and develop a team of professional managers, fostering collaboration and reducing interdepartmental silos. The ideal candidate will have approximately 15 years of experience managing manufacturing facilities with multiple technical roles. Proven experience in developing leadership teams is more critical than agri-food experience.

Risk Mitigation : Identify and mitigate risks to ensure business continuity.

Safety First : Ensure products are manufactured safely and securely, in accordance with regulatory and SQF requirements.

Profitability - Long-Term Financial Performance : Responsible for the operating results and operational success of the farm.

Production and Logistics : Effectively measure and manage performance to achieve and exceed production targets. The farm operates like a Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) manufacturing facility with production (cultivation) and packaging departments, as well as R&D, QA, and supply chain functions.

Qualifications

Skills sought for this Plant Director role :

University degree in business administration, logistics, engineering, or a related field.

More than 10 years of experience leading high-growth production operations in a food processing and / or manufacturing environment.

Strong technical understanding of job aspects, including horticulture and quality assurance, and the ability to understand the planning components of the cultivation system.

Proficiency in both French and English (spoken and written).

Summary

The Plant Director reports directly to the Vice-President of Operations. They will have approximately six or seven direct reports, and the total plant headcount is around 120 people, with additional temporary staff. The position requires a positive leader capable of bringing the team together, providing coaching, and encouraging initiative and risk-taking. The ability to manage and develop a leadership team is the priority, as processes can be learned. The farm operates continuously, similar to a just-in-time process, with urgency due to the living product and the interconnectedness of processes.
