Job summary

Cambridge is seeking an experienced Planning Technician to join the Planning Services Division in the Planning and Growth Department. The role focuses on reviewing licenses and permits for zoning compliance, interpreting by-laws and Official Plans, and assisting with development applications and inspections.

The candidate will provide guidance to property owners and applicants, prepare reports and notices for committees and council, and contribute to parkland funding calculations and accuracy

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years related Planning experience.
  • Possession of a current Certified Planning Technician designation or eligible for Registered Professional Planner.
  • Drivers’ License is required.

Responsibilities

  • Review business license, building permit and demolition permit applications for zoning compliance and provide zoning approval.
  • Review and process Property Information Letter requests by interpreting zoning by-law, confirming Official Plan and Heritage status and verifying information from Building Permit records.
  • Conduct site inspections and process the release of Site Plan Agreement securities.
  • Review sign variance and fence variance applications by interpreting the City’s Sign and Fence By-laws.
  • Respond to planning, zoning and development inquiries at counter, phone and email.
  • Assist in processing development applications and prepare materials for approvals.
  • Assist with preparation of recommendation reports, notices and presentation materials for meetings.
  • Review building permits to determine parkland dedication cash-in-lieu and ensure payments prior to permit issuance.
  • Provide guidance on planning approvals and land use permissions.

Job Profile

We are looking for one (1) experienced Planning Technician to join the Planning Services Division team, Planning and Growth Department available immediately. The focus of this position will be to:

What you will be doing
  • Reviewbusiness license, building permit and demolition permit applications for the purpose of confirming zoning compliance and provide zoning approval.
  • Reviewand process Property Information Letter requests by interpreting the Zoning By-law, confirming Official Plan and Heritage designation status and verifying information from Building Permit records.
  • Conduct site inspections and process the release of Site Plan Agreement securities.
  • Review and process sign variance and fence variance applications by interpreting the City’s Sign and Fence By-laws.
  • Respondto planning, zoning and development-related inquiries at the counter and on the telephone and e-mail.
  • Assist in the processing of development applications including Official Plan Amendments, Zoning By-law Amendments, Part Lot Control Exemptions, Site Plans, Condominiums and Committee of Adjustment applications and prepare materials required for approvals by the Director of Planning, Planning and Development Committee, and Council's approval, as required.
  • Assist with the preparation of recommendation reports, notices and presentation materials for various meetings, including Planning and Development Committee and Council.
  • Review building permit applications to determine and calculate parkland dedication cash-in-lieu requirements and ensure applicable payments are collected prior to permit issuance.
  • Provide guidance to property owners, applicants, consultants, and the public regarding planning approvals and land use permissions, including severances, minor variances, rezoning applications, site plan approval, and other development-related processes.
Education

Two-year College Diploma in Planning or Similar

Experience and Knowledge
  • 1-2 years related Planning experience
  • Possession of a current Certified Planning Technician designation or eligible for Registered Professional Planner
  • Drivers’ License is required

Valid G driver's license.

Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)

Your compensation

This position is within Grade 7 of the inside workers union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $72,582 to $77,132 (2026 rates).We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.

Hours of work

The current regular hours of work are in accordance with the collective agreement, however currently are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm., Monday to Friday; some evening hours are required
