Main Purpose and Function
The Planning Assistant provides technical and professional support to the Rezoning Centre, with a focus on supporting the processing of rezoning applications and related functions, as well as contributing to a variety of rezoning and policy initiatives. The emphasis is on collecting and analyzing information, developing information graphics to communicate complex ideas, and assisting with public consultation and public hearings.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collects data and performs research and analysis.
  • Responds to development and rezoning enquiries from the public.
  • Organizes public consultation processes and facilitating small group discussions.
  • Prepares mailing lists, notifications and other related documents.
  • Receives and summarizes public comments.
  • Maintains web pages and social media accounts.
  • Performs skilled design and reproduction work relative and prepares presentations, public consultation information, and other graphic materials.
  • Provides support for public hearings.
  • Completes basic built form analysis such as shadow and massing studies.
  • Performs other related duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of grade 12 supplemented by courses in urban planning, graphics, and/or related courses or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • University degree in Planning would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of zoning and land-use planning and regulations, land development economics, and urban design principles.
  • Sound knowledge of drafting, layout work, report design and reproduction and of graphical presentation of statistical data and planning projects.
  • Sound knowledge of the techniques and practices used in performing survey and statistical analyses work.
  • Working knowledge of Sketch Up (3D Software), MapInfo, Microsoft Office Suite and graphics programs (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Ability to work independently and participate on work teams and with the public
  • Ability to complete assignments using sound professional techniques and judgment.
  • Ability to self-manage workload and meet time demands (e.g., prioritize tasks, communicate expected time frames for the delivery of items with staff and request help when needed).
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal).
  • Research and analytical abilities, with an aptitude in the legal and technical aspects of planning work.
  • Strong graphic skills are a requirement
  • Ability to meet transportation needs
  • Familiarity with rezoning processes is preferred.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
