Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Supervisor and the technical direction and guidance of a Senior Planner, undertakes moderately complex assignments related to development approvals, planning and policy development.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participates as a member of a project team.
  • Undertakes a broad spectrum of projects related to planning activities and policy development.
  • Performs detailed analysis of development proposals, makes recommendations, and provides professional planning opinions utilizing best planning principles.
  • Prepares comments, reports, and by-laws for presentation to Committees and Council.
  • Performs detailed analysis and work associated with the processing of plans of subdivision and condominium.
  • Negotiates and prepares site plan, subdivision, condominium, development charge, development, and other agreements.
  • Provides information to the public and the development community on matters relating to land use planning.
  • Prepares Planning Section comments to the Committee of Adjustment.
  • Participates in the development of processes and policies as required.
  • Participates in the preparation of documents and materials for Ontario Municipal Board Hearings and may appear, as required, at the Ontario Municipal Board or other tribunals.
  • Represents the Section on internal and external committees and at community meetings related to planning matters.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
  • Honours Degree in Urban Planning or a related discipline; and
  • Two years of land use planning experience preferably in a municipal environment; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act and other related provincial legislation
  • Must have and maintain or attain accreditation as a Registered Professional Planner in Ontario (full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute) within 6 years of hire
Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to deliver presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a demanding and fast paced environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with members of City Council, the Committee of Adjustment, superiors, co-workers, and the general public
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
  • May be required to attend meetings outside of regular working hours
