Main Purpose and Function
The Planner I is a key member of the Area Planning & Implementation team within Community Planning; Long-Range and Strategic Planning. The incumbent will provide professional and technical services towards the updatesand implementation of several community and area plans, including supporting the development of new land usepolicy. The position will require providing policy advice on rezoning enquiries and applications.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Support numerous initiatives related to the updates and implementation of community and area plans.
  • Assists in the development of new land use policy and area plans.
  • Helps designs and conducts public consultation activities, including community meetings and workshops.
  • Conducts complex policy research and data analysis and assists with writing reports and memos.
  • Reviews and provides policy advice on rezoning enquiries and applications.
  • Facilitates meetings and presents to other staff and management
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:

  • A university graduate degree in planning or a related discipline, recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners
  • Minimum of one year of professional experience related to the duties and responsibilities of the position, or anequivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is desired.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of urban planning, architecture or research subjects and a working knowledge of other subjectsapplicable to planning work, including knowledge of the City's community and area plans, and related policies.
  • Ability to project manage and complete smaller policy projects or distinct components of a larger work program.
  • Experience in providing internal and external policy advice.
  • Sound knowledge of planning and research methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of GIS software, such as ArcGIS, is an asset.
  • Experience in supporting public engagement processes.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently and participate successfully on work teams.


Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
