Job summary

City of Edmonton is seeking a Planner I to support subdivision and development coordination across Edmonton's growing neighbourhoods. You will manage applications, coordinate reviews, and serve as the main contact for applicants and industry reps.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Urban Planning (or related field) and at least two years of land use planning experience. A hybrid work arrangement may be available and the team emphasizes equity and inclusive engagement.

Qualifications

Job description

Are you ready to build thriving, well-connected communities and help shape the future of Edmonton's urban landscape? As a Planner I within the Subdivision and Development Coordination unit, you will play an essential role in processing incoming subdivision land development applications across Edmonton's growing and established neighbourhoods. Serving as a key technical resource and project manager, you will coordinate multidisciplinary reviews, navigate statutory regulations, and collaborate with diverse groups to ensure land development aligns with city policies.

What will you do?
  • Manage, review, and process subdivision and endorsement applications in accordance with municipal standards and provincial legislation
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary input from internal business areas, external referral agencies, and key collaborators to facilitate context-specific technical solutions
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for applicants, development industry representatives, and community members regarding the subdivision process
  • Prepare Subdivision Conditions of Approval letters, reports, Municipal Reserve memos, and approval documents for final consideration by the Subdivision Authority
  • Attend appeal hearings to present objective context, justify subdivision conditions, and defend application decisions
  • Conduct site inspections to evaluate land development proposals in real-world contexts
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning or a directly related field
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in land use planning, including reviewing and responding to land development applications
  • Candidates with less than two years of relevant experience may be considered for an opportunity concept
Assets
  • Eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)
Skills required for success
  • Practical understanding of provincial land use legislation (e.g., Municipal Government Act, Matters Related to Subdivision and Development Regulation), municipal statutory plans, and the Edmonton Zylaw
  • Project management skills to balance heavy workloads, coordinate multi-department reviews, and meet statutory timelines
  • Negotiation, facilitation, and conflict management skills to resolve complex land development challenges
  • Professional customer service skills supporting a range of development industry professionals, as well as public inquiries. Ability to explain technical planning nuances clearly
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills for drafting technical reports, conditions of approval, and legal documentation
  • Analytical thinking to interpret complex development plans, plans of survey, and technical referral feedback
  • Self-directed initiative to manage files independently while maintaining quality and accuracy
  • Technical proficiency using digital workplace platforms, including Google Workspace and planning database systems (e.g., POSSE)

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
