Position Overview

This position interacts with FortisBC, contractors, consultants, property owners and the public with respect to proactively preventing damage to FortisBC High Pressure pipelines and assets. This position ensures adherence to work permits and helps monitor for encroachments, unauthorized activities on rights of way and in road allowances to ensure public and worker safety, pipeline integrity and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as a FortisBC representative on site.
  • Under the direction of management;
    • Responsible for ensuring compliance with permit requirements, standards, and safety regulations for work around FortisBC high-pressure assets.
    • Respond to assigned BC 1 Calls.
    • Follow established guidelines and procedures, in compliance with standards and safety regulations, to locate FortisBC high pressure pipelines and assets, which requires the use of maps and locating equipment.
    • Responsible for preparing and issuing stop work orders related to unauthorized work or work that is not compliant with permits.
  • Responsible for effectively scheduling their day-to-day activities, completion, and documentation of their work for BC1 Call and Permits related to working around their assigned FortisBC assets.
  • Assists FortisBC with on-site evaluations of pipelines, right of way, boundaries, soil conditions, encroachments, unauthorized activities, and vegetation management.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties, which do not affect the rating of the job.
Requirements
  • Completion of recognized post-secondary technician certificate, preferably in civil engineering technology or petroleum technology.
  • Three (3) years directly related relevant utility construction experience with the ability to conduct natural gas line locating. Advanced knowledge of Canadian Standards Association Z662, Pipeline Act of BC and Regulations, WorkSafe regulations. (Successful completion of a test to confirm locate ability will be required)
  • Working knowledge of computer systems operations, environment, peripherals and various applications software in use in the department.
  • Sound verbal communications and interpersonal skills. Must be capable of making formal presentations when required.
  • Sound analytical, organizational and written communications skills including the ability to correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors as required to prepare and compose a variety of external and internal correspondence and process inquiries.
  • Ability to deal effectively with customers, resolve, and deescalate conflict with internal and external customers in a courteous and professional manner (written and verbal)
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s license.
