Job description

Do you want to work in an environment where you will be responsible for construction, repairs, installations, and maintenance of piping systems and associated mechanical equipment? If so, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) location is looking for a Pipefitter to support site operations through testing, commissioning, decommissioning, and troubleshooting activities. Apply today!

What will you be doing!
  1. Working from drawings and sketches as required, and providing material take-offs and labour estimates.
  2. Reading, interpreting engineering drawings and welding to the engineering specifications as outlined.
  3. Locating and marking the positions for connections and fixtures, then cutting the required holes through walls, ceilings and floors.
  4. Selecting the type and size of pipe required for a project, then measuring, cutting, shaping and joining pipes, elbows and joints according to the project specifications.
  5. Threading, bending and clamping pipe and secure piping connections by gluing, soldering, welding, fusing or clamping connections together.
  6. Diagnosing and locating leaks, broken or frozen pipes, plugged drains and pipes.
  7. Testing for leaks in new and repaired systems with compressed air and/or water.
  8. Cleaning and thawing drains and pipes with chemicals and power steamers.
  9. Installing gauges, thermostats, valves and fittings.
  10. Installing, repairing and maintaining water softeners, garbage disposals, lawn sprinklers, dishwashers and other appliances.
  11. Installing water closets, sinks, basins, baths, urinals and bidets.
  12. Installing and maintaining water purification, water piping and sewage disposal systems.
  13. Identifying and reporting any real or potential safety hazards; wearing all safety equipment related to the position, and participating in all safety-training offered through the facility.
  14. Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
  1. Education
    • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
    • Must have completed apprenticeship training or equivalent and be qualified as Steamfitter-Pipefitter / Plumber with an Interprovincial Red Seal ticket.
  2. Experience
    • Must have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a qualified Steamfitter-Pipefitter/Plumber.
    • Experience in a wide variety of industrial work environments.
  3. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of all applicable codes and standards including Canadian Standards Act B51.1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and National Fire Protection Association in order to provide a safe and healthy work environment.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.
    • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
    • Ability to operate standard shop/hand and portable power tools, fittings/calibration equipment and standard machine tools.
    • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded.
    • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.
    • Exceptional organizational skills with ability to prioritize and use time management is required.
    • Ability to use initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records.
    • Ability to understand detailed information is essential.
    • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work.
    • Conscientious about accuracy.
    • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and response with initiative.
    • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  4. Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions:
  • We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day work week and ten hours a day - starting at 6 am.
  • Must possess physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work that involves bending, lifting and mobility.
  • Must be capable of wearing and working in a respirator and other protective clothing and equipment as required.
  • Ability to walk down equipment in the field.
  • Some exposure to nuclear radiation and industrial hazards.
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures ranging from +30°C to -40°C.
  • Work in environments that require personal protective equipment and clothing including construction/decommissioning sites, contamination zones and potentially confined spaces.
