The South West Yorkshire PartnershipNHS Foundation Trust came into operation in April 2002, bringing together NHSservices for the local authority areas of Barnsley, Wakefield, Calderdale andKirklees.
The post is based at Beechdale onThe Dales in Calderdale. This ward provides care for older people experiencingmental illness.
As a physiotherapy team we supportindividuals with their physical health during their admission to hospital andthe senior physiotherapy assistant will play a vital role in this. Experienceof working in a Care/ NHS setting alongside experience working with MentalHealth, the elderly or Learning disabilities is essential.
The successful applicant will workclosely with the ward physiotherapists and MDT helping to provide therapy to asmall caseload across the wards. The post holder will be expected to workindependently at times once they have completed a thorough induction. Roles andresponsibilities of the position will include implementation of rehabilitation /exercise programs, exercise and education classes with the physiotherapist andreview of mobility equipment/aids with the support of the physiotherapist.

We are looking for someone withknowledge and enthusiasm in caring for people with mental health problems. Youwill need to be a versatile, adaptable team player who has good organisationalskills. You will be required to use a PC and so a knowledge of IT would bebeneficial. There is a strongnetwork of allied health professionals across the Trust with clear professionalleadership and regular supervision within the profession. You will be supportedto develop your own CPD, and we encourage reflective practice and accessing regularin service/external training.

The post holder will:
Under the supervision/direction ofregistered health careprofessionals/associate practitioner, performdelegated interventions and care tasks, for which they have received training,seeking support as and when necessary.
As part of a healthcare team,provide the highest standards of safe and compassionate planned care to peoplethat maximises their recovery and rehabilitation potential.
Demonstrating sensitivity,empathy and active listening skills, maintain positive and appropriaterelationships with people at all times.
Demonstrate an understanding of thecare and treatment programmesrequired fora designated group of serviceusers.
To follow a care plan, adviseand guide service users, family and carers in following prescribedinterventions and make the appropriate adjustments withinown competence and skill set and be able to communicate any changesto service users andregistered health care professionals.
Be required to concentrate forperiods of time, depending upon the care intervention/care plan This may include areas of work requiring physicaleffort, with regard to risk, following the risk assessmentand health & safety.
Exercisea degree of independence, initiative and judgement and considerdifferent approaches when delivering tasks. Assess situations, eg following falls preventionguidance identify and resolve potential problems, within own competence.
Ensure thecare experiencedis positiveand service user safety is maintained. Treat everyone eg, service users, their relatives, visitors, colleagues etc, with respect, dignity, courtesyand in accordance with the Trusts Values.
Feedback their observations tothe registered professional/ clinical team to contribute to the care/treatmentplanning process. Understand the principles underlying care planning eg,enabling the service user to reach an optimum level of functioning /independence / recovery.
Implement treatment/carewithin well-established policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines andestablished clinical care plans within own competence and skill set.
Assisting in the organisingand participating in a range of therapeutic groups and activities as delegatedby the registered practitioner working within own competence and skill set.
Applybasic knowledge of longer-term health conditions, within the remit of careplanning, providing advice, support and feedback to a registered professional.
Undertake the physical aspectsof care eg, moving and handling of service users. Use items of equipment indelivering care eg, hoists, wheelchairs etc. (as appropriate to the role),ensuring appropriate instruction on their use has been received.
Assist in dealing withverbal/physical aggression using de-escalation techniques, this may include theneed for RRPI techniques (as appropriate to the ward or community based roleand in line with Trust policy and training).
Attend to the service userspersonal care needs as and when required.
Participate in a flexiblerostering arrangement providing /7 day care (as appropriate to therole/service).
