Job summary

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto is seeking a Physiotherapist to join the Neuromuscular Team. The role focuses on assessment and treatment of children and youth with progressive neuromuscular disorders, working within an interprofessional team to meet individualized goals.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Physiotherapy, be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, and bring at least 2 years of pediatric experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Physiotherapy.
  • Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
  • Minimum 2 years pediatric experience.
  • Membership in CPA/OPA is an asset.
  • Experience with progressive neuromuscular disorders is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate and implement individualized client-centered goals with measurable outcomes.
  • Provide care in collaboration with client/family and document the habilitative/rehabilitative process.
  • Interface with interprofessional care team to ensure integrated care.
  • Incorporate evaluative activities to ensure efficient and effective health care.
  • Utilize research to support evidence-informed practice.
  • Educate clients, families, and professionals within the organization and community.
  • Provide direct service, consultation, mediation and education to maximize physical functioning.
  • Promote the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being of patients and families.
  • Adhere to College standards for practice and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Therapist – Neuromuscular Team

The Physical Therapist role will be part of the interdisciplinary neuromuscular team. The neuromuscular team strives to optimize and enhance the quality of life for children/youth with neuromuscular conditions and their families. We fill a collaborative role to share knowledge and information, provide assessments and deliver care. Our aim is to respectfully support and guide children/youth and families to reach their personalized life goals and values.

The physiotherapist is part of an interdisciplinary team that provides assessment and treatment to clients with progressive neuromuscular disorders and their families. This position will work collaboratively with the team to ensure clients have their physiotherapy needs met.

Candidates that are part‑time at Holland Bloorview are preferred due to the need for flexibility in scheduling, associated rounds/team meetings and coverage for colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Partner with clients and families to formulate and implement individualized client‑centered goals with focused, targeted and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide client care in collaboration with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care, documenting the habilitative/rehabilitative process according to hospital policies.
  • Interface and problem solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers as appropriate to ensure an integrated approach to care.
  • Incorporate evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
  • Utilize research to establish and support evidence‑informed practice.
  • Utilize the teaching/learning process to provide education on various conditions, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and the community.
  • Provide direct service, consultation, mediation and education to clients, families, and community providers with focus on maximizing the client’s physical functioning.
  • Promote and support the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well‑being of patients and families.
  • Practices according to organizational policies and standards for practice as set out by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Physiotherapy (Master’s preferred)
  • Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
  • Minimum 2 years paediatric experience
  • Membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and/or the Ontario Physiotherapy Association is an asset.
  • Experience with clients with progressive neuromuscular disorders (eg. DMD, SMA) preferred
  • Knowledge of and skills in physical therapy assessment and treatment of children and youth with neuromuscular conditions
  • Knowledge of and experience with physical therapy assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications.
  • Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Goal Attainment Scaling, and WeeFIM)
  • ADP mobility authorizer status preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team
  • Proven ability to independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team is essential
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development
  • Status appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy at University of Toronto is an asset
