Job summary

The Physiotherapist I (PT) or Occupational Therapist will join the fast-paced Inpatient Acute Care team at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Alberta’s busiest tertiary hospital.

You will deliver evidence-based rehabilitation for arthroplasty patients (hip, knee, shoulder), document in Connect Care, and contribute to mentorship, student supervision and quality improvement initiatives while working evening shifts from 1:00 to 9:15 pm.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy and licensure in Alberta.
  • CPR (BLS-HCP) certification required.
  • Strong clinical reasoning and teamwork in interdisciplinary settings.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; Connect Care experience.
  • Inpatient acute care experience preferred.

Responsibilities

JOIN OUR TEAM at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Alberta’s busiest tertiary hospital. We are seeking a dedicated Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist to join our Inpatient Acute Care team. The RAH serves over 500,000 patients annually across one-third of Canada’s landmass and is home to specialized programs including Level 2 Trauma/ICU, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Stroke, Cardiac Care, and the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. Our Rehabilitation team is an integral part of the exceptional care delivered at the RAH. We are a collaborative team of OTs, PTs, Recreation Therapists, SLPs, and Therapy Assistants, driven by a commitment to clinical excellence, professional growth, and compassionate patient care. About the Role: We have an exceptional and progressive arthroplasty program at the RAH, completing the most arthroplasty surgeries in the province each year. You would be caring for arthroplasty day surgery or admission patients to ensure appropriate exercise prescription, teach functional daily skills, and ensure a safe discharge from hospital. This includes hip, knee, or shoulder arthroplasty patients. You would be responsible for meeting key performance indicators that are impactful for these patients’ recovery. Description:

As the Physiotherapist I (PT), you will provide therapeutic interventions to enable clients to achieve optimum physical function and independence in development, disease, disability, chronic conditions, illness and functional decline. You will provide intervention (i.e. prevention, triage, screening, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, treatment, management, education, consultation, fostering resourcefulness, case management, referral and transition support to individuals, groups, populations and communities. You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. The PT collaborates with patient(s) and families in determining, implementing and evaluating appropriate rehabilitation strategies. You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich supports and engage in quality improvement; partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families and other stakeholders to advance services for their clients. You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community; participates in peer mentoring; and supervises students. You may provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides and Provisional Physiotherapists.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited university program. Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Heart and Stroke CPR (BLS-HCP) certification is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills, along with proven success working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities are essential. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required. Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) is expected. Knowledge of community resources; equipment acquisition; continuum of care and discharge planning is required. As work tasks and charting are computer-based, candidates must be able to perform extensive repetitive motion tasks and tolerate long periods of sitting or standing. The role also requires participation in hands‑on patient care, including assisting with transfers, supporting bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances. Candidates must be able to regularly lift and carry weights of 10–15 kg as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the assessment and treatment of patients with acute or chronic musculoskeletal injuries, as well as those within the geriatric population. Experience mentoring PT students. Experience managing complex medical patient populations. A strong understanding of related community resources. A minimum of one year of recent experience in an adult inpatient acute care setting or at least one acute care placement for new graduates. Familiarity with Connect Care.
