Job summary

Alberta Health Services seeks a Physiotherapist I for the Royal Alexandra Hospital Rehabilitation Services. You will provide therapeutic interventions to improve function and independence, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team and engaging patients and families in care planning.

The position is Casual/Relief with varied shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends) and a 7.75-hour day, located at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited university program.
• Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta.
• Heart and Stroke CPR (BLS-HCP) certification is required.
• Strong clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills, with ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
• Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities are essential.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Computer-based charting requiring extended repetitive motion; ability to lift 10–15 kg.

Responsibilities

Description

As the Physiotherapist I (PT), you will provide therapeutic interventions to enable clients to achieve optimum physical function and independence in development, disease, disability, chronic conditions, illness and functional decline. You will provide intervention (i.e. prevention, triage, screening, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, treatment, management, education, consultation, fostering resourcefulness, case management, referral and transition support to individuals, groups, populations and communities. You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. The PT collaborates with patient(s) and families in determining, implementing and evaluating appropriate rehabilitation strategies. You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich supports and engage in quality improvement; partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families and other stakeholders to advance services for their clients. You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community; participates in peer mentoring; and supervises students. You may provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides and Provisional Physiotherapists.

Required Qualifications

• Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical reasoning and problem‑solving skills, along with proven success working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
• Strong communication and conflict resolution abilities are essential.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required.
• Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) is expected.
• As work tasks and charting are computer‑based, candidates must be able to perform extensive repetitive motion tasks and tolerate long periods of sitting or standing.
• The role also requires participation in hands‑on patient care, including assisting with transfers, supporting bariatric clients, bending, reaching, twisting, and walking distances.
• Candidates must be able to regularly lift and carry weights of 10–15 kg as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience assessing & treating the geriatric patient population.
• Knowledge of community resources, equipment acquisition, continuum of care & discharge planning.
• Mentoring Physiotherapy students is an asset.
• At least 1 year recent experience in an adult inpatient acute care setting preferred; at least one acute care placement for new grads.
• Experience working with complex medical patient populations, including end‑of‑life care, chronic disease management, and dementia.
• Connect Care experience.
