Job summary

Saskatchewan Health Authority in Saskatoon is seeking a Medical Physics Assistant to support radiation oncology services, including commissioning and QA of treatment machines and planning systems, clinical service, radiation safety, and research within the Medical Physics department.

  • Proven ability to operate radiotherapy equipment and perform QA tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Commissioning and QA of radiation oncology treatment machines and computerized treatment planning systems used in radiotherapy cancer care.
  • Clinical service, radiation safety and programmatic research and development within the radiation oncology service line.
  • Collaborate with medical physicists and staff to ensure safe, accurate and efficient operations.

Salary or Pay Band: Pay Band 6, $34.815 to $40.585 (5 step range)

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reporting to the Site Manager or Director of Medical Physics and working under the supervision of medical physicists, the Medical Physics Assistant responsibilities vary from center to center and includes commissioning and quality assurance (QA) of radiation oncology treatment machines and computerized treatment planning systems used in radiotherapy cancer care, clinical service, radiation safety and programmatic research and development within the radiation oncology service line.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics or related discipline.

Experience:

Skills:

  • Ability to safely operate
  • Medical linear accelerator (Linac) treatment machine.
  • Brachytherapy treatment machine.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in various stages of completion according to priorities.
  • Initiative and independent analytic assessment required to solve complex problems.
  • Effective judgment and problem solving skills are required to select the most appropriate action from a variety of alternatives.
  • Ability to effectively communicate factual information both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of physics and the interactions of radiation with matter and the ability to apply these principles to clinical medical physics.
  • Ability to operate a variety of scientific instruments.
  • Ability to collect and analyze scientific data effectively.
  • Maintains proficiency in current physical laboratory techniques and standards.
  • Accuracy of fine motor movements required for data entry and performing specialized tasks.
  • Intermediate knowledge of currently applicable computer programming languages such as C#, Java, Visual Basic, Matlab, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge of operating platforms including Windows, UNIX, Citrix, etc.
  • Human relations skills required to ensure compliance and promote acceptance through negotiating with staff and/or suppliers where there is a requirement to resolve the conflict or situation.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
