Physician with Background in Substance Use Treatment

Department of Psychiatry

BC Children's Hospital

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a physician experienced in working with youth and families struggling with risky substance use to join our expanding substance use service at British Columbia Children's Hospital (BCCH). The Substance Use Response and Facilitation (SURF) Team provides sub-specialty care to children and youth who use drugs and alcohol across the BCCH site.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Assess and treat substance use disorders, with or without mental health disorders.
  2. Manage intoxication and withdrawal in various settings including Emergency Department, inpatient, and ambulatory services.
  3. Collaborate with medical, emergency, ambulatory, and community teams to support patient care.
  4. Contribute to evidence-based, trauma-informed care aimed at reducing patient-initiated discharges.
  5. Participate in outpatient care for patients referred to the developing SURF clinic.
  6. Provide indirect patient support via telephone or virtual support through the BCCH Compass Program.
  7. Engage in teaching and supervision of medical students, residents, and fellows.
Qualifications
  • Experience in assessment, treatment, and family support for children and youth with substance use issues.
  • Desirable: Experience with OAT prescribing.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership with RCPSC or CCFP, and CPSBC.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate a trauma-informed, patient- and family-centered approach.
  • Superior communication skills and experience working with substance-using youth.
