Physician Assistant (PA) – 1.0 FTE – Athabasca, AB

This position is with the Aspen PCN

FTE: 1.0

Status: Permanent Hours per Week: 38.75

Primary Location: Athabasca, AB

Position Summary

The role of the Aspen PCN Physician Assistant (PA) is to work collaboratively with patients, supervising physician/s, family physicians, and other team members in a multi-disciplinary environment to ensure the provision of high-quality evidence-based health care. The PA will act as a healthcare extender, working under the supervision of a physician to complement existing services and aid in improving patient access to health care. The PA will provide a range of health services to patients, including both preventative and complex, comprehensive care, working to full scope as directed by the CPSA Scope of Practice and supervising physician.

What You Will Do

  • Work collaboratively within the PCN to enhance the delivery of primary care services to identified patient populations, under the direct or indirect supervision of a Physician
  • Perform a variety of PA duties to provide consistent high-quality care
  • Conduct assessments, provide comprehensive documentation, develop and implement treatment plans with the collaborative care team
  • Document patient care in compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements
  • Initiate and follow-up on appropriate investigations
  • Consult with supervising physician for direction, guidance, and expertise
  • Order, obtain, and review laboratory, diagnostic and other reports relevant to patient care
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals to providers, resources, and programs
  • Deliver chronic disease management education according to clinical practice guidelines
  • Identify needs and set priorities in collaboration with the client and other team members
  • Assist in the development of policies and protocols for clinic programs
  • Participate in evaluation of the clinic and its services
  • Be responsible for own professional development through strategies highlighted in annual performance reviews

What You Need To Succeed

  • Applicants MUST be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
  • Excellent knowledge of PA Scope of Practice
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to build good working relationships with healthcare professionals, patients, families, and community members
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively in a very active work environment
  • Respect for privacy and confidentiality
  • Thrives in a complex and fast-paced environment
  • High levels of integrity, professional behaviour, and independent judgement
  • Minimum basic computer skills in word processing and email
  • Knowledge of and ability to use electronic medical records
  • Successful completion of a recognized accredited PA educational program
  • Physician Assistant certification through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in the USA
  • Current CPSA Registration
  • Current Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA) membership
  • BLS/ACLS certification
  • 3+ years experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector
