Job Description

Position Summary:

Portage District General Hospital is seeking a dedicated and skilled Physician Assistant (PA) or Clinical Assistant (Cl.A) to join our Obstetrical team in a 0.7 EFT position. This exciting opportunity offers hands-on involvement in the full spectrum of obstetrical care. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with physicians and nurses’ teams to provide high-quality care for mothers and newborns. A brand-new health centre is scheduled to open in early 2026. This new building will have increased emergency treatment areas, dedicated mental health treatment rooms, increased ambulatory care treatment spaces, a dedicated cultural space, 3 operating suites, and 114 in-patient beds.

The PA/Cl.A is an academically prepared healthcare professional, educated in the medical model that practices medicine under the supervision of licensed physicians within a patient-centered healthcare team. The PA/CI.A is a physician extender and not an independent practitioner. This position is part of the PCAM union.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with patient assessments in the obstetrical triage unit
  • Support and assist with low risk labor and vaginal deliveries
  • Provide intraoperative assistance during cesarean sections and other obstetrical surgeries
  • Participate in newborn assessments and resuscitation as part of the baby doc team
  • Collaborate with physicians to ensure safe neonatal care
  • Conduct routine postpartum assessments and documentation
  • Support continuity of care from triage through delivery and postnatal follow-up
  • Work collaboratively with the interprofessional maternity care team

Qualifications:

  • Must be either a graduate of a Physician Assistant Educational Program acceptable to the CPSM and eligible for national certification or a registered Clinical Assistant with the CPSM
  • Must be registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba
  • Ongoing Physician/Clinical Assistant Continuing Professional Development (CPD) required
  • Previous obstetrical, perinatal, or surgical assisting experience considered a strong asset
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-acuity situations
  • Given the cultural diversity of our region, the ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population is required
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums
  • Good work and attendance record

Schedule:

• Primarily daytime shifts with potential for evening/weekend coverage as required
• Participation in on-call or delivery coverage may be scheduled on rotation
