WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Physician Assistant (PA) is an integral member of the Emergency Department interdisciplinary team and works collaboratively with Emergency Physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff to provide high-quality, patient-centered care within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Working under the supervision and delegation of the attending Emergency Physician and in accordance with approved medical directives, policies, and applicable legislation, the PA contributes to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and disposition of patients presenting to the Emergency Department. The PA supports the delivery of safe, efficient, and evidence-informed care across a broad spectrum of patient presentations and acuity levels.

In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the PA plays a key role in advancing Emergency Department strategic priorities, including reducing Physician Initial Assessment (PIA) times, improving patient flow, supporting admission avoidance initiatives, optimizing Emergency Department length of stay, and enhancing the patient and family experience. The PA works proactively to support timely assessment, diagnostic workup, treatment initiation, reassessment, and disposition planning to improve access to emergency care and overall departmental performance.

The PA participates in quality improvement, patient safety, education, and operational initiatives, utilizing departmental performance indicators and data to support achievement of organizational and Emergency Department goals. The position may be strategically deployed based on patient volumes, demand patterns, operational priorities, and departmental performance metrics to maximize impact on patient access, flow, and quality of care.

The Physician Assistant reports operationally and clinically to the Chief of Emergency Medicine, who provides oversight for role deployment, clinical practice, quality, and operational priorities within the Emergency Department. Administrative support for scheduling, attendance management, payroll, and human resource processes is provided by the Emergency Department Manager. • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing demands.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and quality improvement.
