Job description

Position Summary

In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The Physician Assistant (PA), Emergency, performs a variety of clinical duties within the scope defined by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC). Clinical care by the PA occurs in select facilities under the supervision of a PA Emergency Program Physician Supervisor. The PA reports to a Site Administrative Manager but is accountable to the Physician Supervisor for quality of care and professional development. The PA works collaboratively with ED physicians, residents, nursing, and allied health professionals to provide team-based care.

Starting salary ranges from approximately $88,990 to $111,237, based on education, training, experience, and comparable positions.

Functional Reporting Relationships

The Physician Assistant, Emergency, reports to the Physician Supervisor for clinical matters and administratively to the Manager, Clinical Operations or delegated leader.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant: either Canadian Certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) by PACCC or Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) by NCCPA.
  • Enrollment and compliance with continuing professional development requirements, with proof from PACCC or NCCPA.
  • Annual licensure maintenance with CPSBC.
  • English language proficiency meeting CPSBC standards.
  • Legal authorization to work in British Columbia (Canadian Citizenship, permanent residency, or equivalent).
  • ACLS certification or achievement within three months of employment.
  • Compliance with Northern Health training requirements.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient in English communication with patients and healthcare teams.
  • Effective computer and documentation skills, including order entry.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and under supervision.
  • Capability to perform duties physically, including night shifts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship-building ability.
  • Adherence to CPSBC and organizational documentation standards.
