STUDENT HEALTH CENTRE

The Student Health Centre (SHC), part of the Health and Wellness Division of Student Affairs and Services, offers comprehensive family-practice-style medical services to students at UNB and St. Thomas University. The centre comprises physicians, a nurse practitioner, a registered dietitian, registered nurses, medical administrative assistants, and the Clinic Director. It provides year-round appointments, team consultations, and supports the university community through preventative health education, community vaccination clinics (often with the Nursing Faculty), programming aligned with the Department of Health and Public Health directives, and other health & wellness initiatives.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 37.5 hours per week

Your Focus

Reporting to the Director of Student Health and Clinical Chief, the Physician provides primary health care for students of both UNB and St. Thomas University. This includes addressing a wide variety of physical, emotional, and situational health issues, whether urgent or elective.

• Assess patients presenting with medical, emotional, or situational problems, including chronic illnesses such as diabetes and asthma, psychiatric conditions, injuries, sexual health concerns, stress, and anxiety.
• Refer patients to other health professionals, such as physiotherapists, specialists, or dietitians, as needed.
• Provide health education and counseling on topics like smoking cessation, nutrition, safe sex, and healthy lifestyles.
• Collaborate or consult with the Nurse Practitioner when diagnosis or treatment plans are unclear or beyond the NP's scope.
• Participate in outreach immunization programs and allergy injections administered by nurses and nurse practitioners.

• Membership or eligibility for membership in the New Brunswick Medical Society, College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick, and Department of Family Practice.
• Licensed to practice medicine in New Brunswick.
