Mamu Tshishkutamashutau - Innu Education invites applications for a Physical Education Teacher in Natuashish, NL. The role focuses on delivering engaging, inclusive PE that supports the whole child and aligns with the province's curriculum in a culturally respectful setting.

You will work with school leadership, support staff and families to foster safe classrooms, incorporate Innu culture and land-based learning, and support students' academic, physical, and social growth.

Formación

• Bachelor of Education from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Teaching Certificate (or eligibility).
• Experience teaching in primary/elementary settings, including practicum for grads.

Located in Labrador, Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) is dedicated to supporting the educational journey of the Innu Nation. With two schools in Natuashish and Sheshatshiu, MTIE serves approximately 1,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, fostering a culturally grounded and student-centered learning environment.

About the Role

We are seeking a Physical Education Teacher to join our instructional team. The Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and inclusive education to students. Working closely with school leadership, support staff, and parents, the Teacher creates a safe and welcoming classroom environment that promotes the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of every child.

This position plays a key role in shaping foundational learning experiences, fostering a lifelong love of learning, and ensuring that curriculum delivery is respectful and reflective of the local community, including Innu culture and values.

Key Responsibilities

• Instructional Delivery: Plan and deliver activities that facilitate active learning and align with provincial curriculum standards while differentiating instruction to meet diverse needs.


• Cultural Integration: Integrate Innu history, culture, and land-based learning opportunities into daily lessons to resonate with Innu students.


• Classroom Management: Establish a positive and safe classroom environment; guide students in social-emotional development, conflict resolution, and peer cooperation.


• Assessment & Reporting: Regularly evaluate academic development through formative and summative assessments; maintain accurate records and prepare detailed progress reports.


• Collaboration: Build respectful relationships with parents and caregivers; collaborate with instructional resource teachers and community members to support students with individualized education plans (IEPs).


• Technology: Utilize modern educational tools and Google Workspace to enhance curriculum delivery and administrative efficiency.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

• Bachelor of Education from a recognized post-secondary institution.


• Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Teaching Certificate (or confirmed eligibility to obtain one).

Mandatory Requirements

• Legal entitlement to work in Canada.


• Provision of a clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (current within the last 6 months).

Experience

• Proven experience teaching in a primary or elementary school setting (including practicum experience for recent graduates).


• Experience working in northern, rural, or Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset.

Knowledge and Skills

• Thorough understanding of child development and pedagogical best practices.


• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.


• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.


• Demonstrated cultural competence, including awareness of Innu culture and values; fluency in Innu-Aimun is considered an asset.
