Job summary

Reel FX Animation in Montreal invites a Lighting and Compositing Artist to join our studio. Under supervision of Lighting Supervisor, you will create and fine‑tune lighting and shadows for shots, render layers, and composite to final image.

Responsibilities include lighting production, collaboration with Director and Lead, following creative direction, addressing timeline risks, and performing compositing tasks such as color correction, rotoscoping, and look development.

Qualifications

• Degree in fine arts or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 1 year as Lighting and Compositing Artist.
• Strong knowledge of Katana, Nuke and Arnold.
• Portfolio showing photorealistic lighting and compositing.
• Familiarity with ACES/OCIO color management.

Responsibilities

• Light production shots as required by lighting quota and Supervisor and perform technical work in support of shot lighting using a variety of tools.
• Partner with the Director, Lead Lighter/Compositor and other staff to understand mood, time of day and color of the composition.
• Follow the creative direction of the production from a lighting standpoint as communicated by the Supervisor.
• Identify to the Supervisor problems that lighting could potentially present with respect to timelines and delivery schedules.
• Performing compositing operations with the rendered layers created, including overall look and feel, color correction, extractions, rotoscoping, and other compositing effects as needed.
• Create photorealistic lighting using photographic references, HDRIs and available on‑set lighting data, matching light direction.
• Work with surfacing and look development artists to ensure materials respond convincingly under shot lighting.
