Job description

Summary
Obtains blood specimens from patients, in accordance with established procedures, while maintaining a professional, customer-sensitive atmosphere.
Responsible for up-front specimen handling and facilitating the workflow in and out of the laboratory, performing various clerical and preprocessing duties, and interacting with others using a variety of communication tools.
Performs the pre-analytical phase of specimen preparation and must handle biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions.
Works cooperatively with all hospital and laboratory staff, and external clients through verbal and written communications to resolve problems, exchange information, receive instructions, establish protocols, and process information concerning patient specimens.
Responsible for the accurate pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens and ensuring their delivery to the appropriate laboratory section.
Includes handling of biohazardous and infectious materials following safety protocols.
Assists client services and technical staff in resolving specimen quality and integrity concerns.
This position requires Patient Care.
Essential Functions - PATIENT SAFETY
Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures to ensure a safe work environment, including:
1. Demonstrating proper hand hygiene, use of two patient identifiers, effective communication during hand-offs, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
2. Obtaining blood specimens from patients according to established procedures, maintaining professionalism and customer sensitivity.
3. Demonstrating workflow and procedure knowledge to management, colleagues, new employees, inspectors, and visitors.
4. Receiving direction from management, which may include administrators, coordinators, managers, supervisors, or work unit leads.
5. Participating in ongoing education, meetings, and committees to maintain and enhance professional skills.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Verifying correct specimen and labeling requirements for test orders.
2. Correctly registering and labeling tubes.
3. Centrifuging and aliquoting specimens per department policy.
4. Sorting, storing, and delivering specimens appropriately.
5. Collaborating with technologists and client services to resolve specimen issues.
6. Answering telephones and providing assistance as needed.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Experience in a hospital laboratory (3-5 years preferred) or internship (0-1 year required).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards.
- Demonstrates annual CAP competencies relevant to their work.
