About the Role :
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Part Time Cord Blood Collections Specialist to join the dynamic Stem Cells Team.
Reporting to the Collection Supervisor, Recruitment / Collections, you will work collaboratively with Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank (CBS’CBB) staff to ensure promotion, development and maintenance of an environment of continuous quality improvement, in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards and customer satisfaction.
Formula for Success :
You will be responsible for umbilical ex-utero cord collections at specified hospital locations. Additionally, you will be responsible for promoting and maintaining public awareness and education, as well as maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assembles and prepares supplies, equipment and associated documentation at work location.
- Tracks and reviews donor permission to collect documentation in collaboration with health care providers at the hospital.
- Performs ex-utero umbilical cord blood collection (phlebotomy) and maternal blood sample collection, as required.
- Ensures that error / accident, reaction / incident reporting is performed and initiates immediate corrective action and follow-up as required, in consultation with the Canadian Blood Services’ Cord Blood Bank Nurse Specialist (CBB-NS) and Supervisor.
Implements and Maintains Operation of the CBS’CBB Collection Location-Hospital
- Performs quality control of equipment, supplies, and procedures. Ensures that required documentation is complete. Ensures all equipment is clean and calibrated and maintains equipment and corresponding documentation.
- Assists in the setup and dismantling of equipment and supplies at the hospital collection site, including packing, loading, and transport of product, supplies and equipment, as required.
- Assists with scheduling and management of daily work requirements.
- Works closely with hospital staff to maintain effective communication to ensure continued cord blood collections and eliminate missed opportunities.
Assists with the Quality Event Management Quality Assurance Program
- Participates in investigations and assists with root cause analysis for quality events within the local recruitment / collection portfolio in consultation with the CBB-NS and Supervisor.
- Ensures timely follow-up with all other departments involved with the quality event and assists with completion of all required documentation and immediate corrective actions.
- Provides advice for the development and implementation of process improvement plans.
Communication / Relationship Management
- Fosters a spirit of cooperation and acts as liaison between team members and hospital stakeholders.
- Promotes good interpersonal skills and customer service principles among team members, pregnant mothers and their families, volunteers, physicians, midwives, nurses and the hospital interdisciplinary team.
Desired Education and Skills :
- Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution, preferably in a science/health-related field of study.
- A minimum of three years of progressive experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
- Experience with current Good Manufacturing Practices is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
- Must be able to work independently, identify issues and provide resolutions to problems at the hospital.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, team building and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team setting as a non-hospital employee in a hospital setting.
- Computer literacy required; proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Must be detail-oriented and capable of working in a highly regulated environment. Ability to work under pressure to meet demands of the job.
- Venepuncture experience is mandatory.
- Experience in cord blood collection is an asset.
- The ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy and strict confidentiality are mandatory.

What you can expect :
- There is a requirement to carry a cellular phone or pager for notification purposes while at the hospital.
- 100% on-site at the Royal Alexandra Hospital working with the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.
- Training will be the first 6-8 weeks Full Time.
- Work schedule is Monday-Friday 7am-3pm and 3pm-11pm.
