A leading healthcare provider in Hamilton is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support patient safety and medication management. The role involves preparing and verifying medications, adhering to safety standards, and collaborating with healthcare professionals. Ideal candidates will have completed an accredited pharmacy program and possess strong attention to detail and teamwork skills.
POSITION SUMMARY:
To support patient safety and the hospital’s medication management system through the preparation, verification and supply of medications.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Successful completion of a Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, OR graduation from an OCP recognized Pharmacy Technician Training Program
• Current registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists as a registered Part-A Pharmacy Technician
• Previous hospital experience is preferred
• Experience with hospital and KROLL computer systems will be an asset
• Typing, computer experience, aseptic technique, pharmaceutical arithmetic, and knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology
• Demonstrated exactness and attention to detail in the performance of technical tasks
• Able to communicate and cooperate with co-workers in a team oriented environment
• Able to recognize professional limitations and refer all matters requiring clinical judgement to a pharmacist or appropriate health care professional
• Must be flexible and able to adapt to change in a fast paced, constantly evolving department
• Good attendance and work record is essential
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Supports the unit dose drug distribution system
• Uses available automation and technology appropriately
• Inventory management such that wastage is minimized and safety standards are maintained, as supported by the OCP, NAPRA, CSHP and Accreditation Canada
• Prepares sterile medications using aseptic technique in accordance to the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) as well as Occupational Health and Safety guidelines
• Adheres to all standards of practice and documentation for controlled substances in accordance with the Controlled Drug and Substance Act and departmental policies
• Prepares, dispenses and maintains inventory of Investigational and Special Access Medications
• Prepares patient specific mixtures and solutions in non-sterile manufacturing including topical preparations
• Answers and determines priority of all incoming phone calls in the dispensing area, referring all clinical questions to a pharmacist
• Liaises with other healthcare team members in order to ensure the safe and effective operation of the medication distribution system
• All other duties as assigned
