Detailed Overview
Under the general supervision of the Coordinator, Pharmacy Services or designate, assists with medication dispensing by performing complex duties related to compounding sterile products as well as packaging, distributing, and inventory control. Monitors and maintains the local system for automated dispensing cabinets. Performs clerical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, sorts, counts, measures, and fills both patient-specific and non-patient-specific medication containers. Assists in the distribution of medications to patient care units and maintains appropriate records.
  • Performs complex duties related to compounding sterile (hazardous and non-hazardous) products according to established procedures; operates pharmacy compounding, packaging, and automated machinery within a Pharmacy Production Centre; maintains and supports the local automated dispensing cabinet system.
  • Repackages medications into unit-of-use format using high-capacity packaging and automation within a Pharmacy Production Centre. Maintains records of repackaging and compounding.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots settings within the automated dispensing cabinet to ensure accuracy and completeness; analyzes reports to monitor system security.
  • Maintains appropriate quantities of wardstock medications; performs validation of medication accuracy and maintains quality assurance records.
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory and wardstock quantities; distributes and maintains relevant records.
  • Identifies outdated drugs for return or destruction by reviewing stock expiry dates.
  • Maintains department work areas; stocks pharmaceuticals, labels, containers, and glassware according to procedures and standards.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, filing, and maintaining medication records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience
Grade 12, graduation from a recognized Pharmacy Assistant course or equivalent.
