Qualifications

  • Grade 12 and completion of a recognized Pharmacy Assistant course.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, sorts, counts, measures and fills medication containers and assists in distributing medications.
  • Performs compounding and operates pharmacy equipment within established procedures.
  • Repackages medications into unit-of-use format and maintains related records.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots automated dispensing cabinet settings and analyzes system reports.
  • Maintains wardstock quantities and validates medication accuracy with staff.
  • Manages inventory and wardstock records for controlled and non-controlled meds.
  • Identifies outdated drugs for return or destruction.
  • Maintains tidy department work areas and proper labeling.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering phone and filing.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision of the Coordinator, Pharmacy Services or designate, assists with medication dispensing by performing complex duties related to compounding sterile products as well as packaging, distributing and inventory control. Monitors and maintains the local system for automated dispensing cabinets. Performs clerical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  1. Receives, sorts, counts, measures and fills both patient‑specific and non‑patient‑specific medication containers. Assists in the distribution of patient‑specific and non‑patient‑specific medications to patient care units as directed and maintains appropriate records.
  2. Performs complex duties related to compounding sterile (hazardous and non‑hazardous) products according to established procedures; operates pharmacy compounding, packaging and automated machinery within a Pharmacy Production Centre and maintains, and supports the local automated dispensing cabinet system.
  3. Repackages medications into unit‑of‑use format using high‑capacity packaging and distribution automation and machinery within a Pharmacy Production Centre. Maintains repackaging and compounding records.
  4. Maintains, and trouble‑shoots settings within the automated dispensing cabinet to ensure accuracy and completeness, and analyses reports to monitor system security.
  5. Maintains appropriate quantities of wardstock medications (manual or automated dispensing cabinet system). Performs a validation of the accuracy of wardstock medications selected by other pharmacy staff in accordance to established policies and procedures. Maintains accurate records of medication selection accuracy and the results of quality assurance reviews.
  6. Maintains pharmacy department inventory and wardstock quantities for non‑controlled and controlled medications. Distributes and maintains relevant inventory, transfer and wardstock delivery records.
  7. Identifies outdated drugs to be returned or destroyed by reviewing stock for lot expiry dates.
  8. Maintains department work areas by ensuring tidiness and order. Stocks pharmaceuticals, labels, containers and glassware in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  9. Performs related clerical duties such as answering telephone, filing and maintaining medication and prescription records.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Grade 12, graduation from a recognized Pharmacy Assistant course or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
