Job description


Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.


Position Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: As per collective agreement

Starting Date: ASAP

This position minimizes and eliminates bedbug/pest infestations and hoarding issues; keeping current on technologies and procedures; ensuring adherence to the mission statement, policies, and procedures of Homes First Society.


Job Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of best practices for bed bug, pest, and hoarding issues
  2. Knowledge of group processes and dynamics
  3. Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to maintain co-operative working relationships with shelter and housing co-workers and interact positively with the tenant population who have experienced homelessness, mental health, and addiction problems
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently
  5. Self-motivated with the ability to problem solve individually and as part of a team/group
  6. Demonstrated organizational, time management, and administration skills
  7. Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software applications
  8. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  9. Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in languages other than English an asset
  10. Working with other staff, Property Supervisor, and tenants to prepare for bed bug/pest removal and/or assist in hoarding clean-up and housing issues stemming from hoarding
  11. Maintain bed bug/pest control tools and equipment in good condition
  12. Must be able to lift 25 kilograms
  13. Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  1. Post-secondary education or equivalent
  2. Several years experience working with people who are homeless or hard to house
  3. Knowledge of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices, and systemic reasons for homelessness
  4. Experience with rental legislation in Ontario
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills
  6. Knowledge of relevant laws, standards, and guidelines
  7. Knowledge of resources and services available in the community
  8. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organization skills
  9. Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset
  10. Certificate of Completion of Homelessness Learning Hub's Harm Reduction for the Homelessness Sector considered an asset
