They provide professional advice to military commanders, particularly in recruiting, selection, leadership, performance appraisal, and other human resource issues.

The primary responsibilities of a Personnel Selection Officer include:

  1. Assess applicants to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and recommend training.
  2. Recommend CAF members for special training.
  3. Support professional development, accreditation, and transition programs.
  4. Conduct applied and advanced behavioural research.
  5. Conduct occupational analyses.
  6. Teach military leadership, management, and behavioural science courses.
  7. Train Military Career Counsellors in interviewing techniques, personnel assessments, and counselling techniques.
  8. Write selection policy, design selection instruments, and develop selection assessment processes.
  9. Engage in strategic human resource concept design, planning, and coordination.

Work environment

Personnel Selection Officers work in various settings, from office environments at headquarters or bases to operational tours abroad supporting CAF missions. They initially work at the base level conducting interviews and aptitude tests, and assessing individuals for various military roles.

If you join the Regular Force, after training, you'll be assigned to your first base with possible relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve Force, you'll serve part-time at a Reserve unit, with opportunities for full-time employment and volunteering for deployments.

Entry requirements

The position requires a Master’s degree in social sciences such as Psychology or Industrial Relations. Other graduate degrees may be considered based on related experience. An undergraduate degree in Psychology is also considered.

Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

After enrolment, you'll undergo 12 weeks of basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, and first aid. Successful completion is required for further training.

Following basic training, language training may be offered, lasting from two to nine months depending on your second language proficiency.

Personnel Selection Officers then attend the Canadian Forces Training Development Centre in Borden, Ontario, to learn interview techniques, evaluation, counselling, and career transition support. They gain practical experience through on-the-job training at a base.

Opportunities for specialized skills development include:

  • Unit Personnel Selection
  • Organizational Consulting

Advanced training options include:

  • Advanced Personnel Selection
  • Graduate studies in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Social Psychology, Industrial Relations, or Sociology
