Position Overview
The Personal Support Worker (PSW) reports to the Unit Supervisor and provides personal care, reports changes in resident status, and documents where applicable. They enhance restorative care by promoting independence in activities of daily living and improve the therapeutic effects of bathing, offering environments and options that meet residents' needs and improve their quality of life. They work closely with the Nursing Restorative Therapist.
Essential Duties
- Assist residents with personal care and activities of daily living according to their care plans.
- Guide residents in activities of daily living, promoting independence, choice, and self-determination.
- Monitor residents' wellbeing and report any changes to registered staff.
- Accurately document care provided during each shift, adhering to policies and procedures.
- Follow all policies, including the Code of Conduct, and maintain effective communication with residents, families, and staff.
- Promote the home's Vision, Mission, Values, and Residents Bill of Rights.
- Ensure health and safety of residents, families, and coworkers.
- Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as per the care plan.
- Monitor resident safety, implement precautionary measures, and document accordingly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment.
- Assist with meal service and provide feeding assistance as needed.
- Participate in team meetings and care planning discussions.
- Use a gentle persuasive approach with residents exhibiting expressive behaviors.
- Adhere to safe transfer practices and use mechanical lifts safely.
- Ensure personal care items are clean, labeled, and accessible.
- Assist with maintaining a safe environment during care provision.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PSW certification from a recognized program of at least 600 hours.
- Program must meet Ministry of Colleges or Universities standards for Ontario.
- Experience with person-centered care philosophies.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a focus on positive social interactions.
- Legal compliance, including a current Vulnerable Sector Check and TB testing results.
- Two supervisory references.
