Job Summary:

The Personal Support Worker provides personal support and homemaking services to clients and families within the framework of VON policies, procedures, and standards. The PSW collaborates with members of the health care team in meeting the needs of clients to attain an optimal level of independence and well-being.

This position is eligible for the temporary $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Observes and evaluates the client’s or family's home, personal situation, and care plan to determine if any changes are needed.
2. Contributes to the development of the personal support care plan under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
3. Implements changes to the care plan under the guidance of the Manager for safety and financial reasons.
4. Reports changes in the client’s or family's personal support needs to the supervisor.
5. Performs personal support tasks including light cleaning, meal preparation, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
6. Provides personal care as directed, including assistance with mobility, hygiene, and daily activities.
7. Provides simple bedside care under the direction of a nurse.
8. Provides respite care to clients as required.
9. Supports families by providing child care as needed.
10. Organizes daily activities under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
11. Completes daily call checks and other required forms.
12. Assesses the client's communication patterns.
13. Communicates with health team members regarding the client's needs.
14. Functions in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and VON policies.
15. Other duties as assigned.

External and Internal Relationships:

1. Engages frequently with the immediate supervisor or the Personal Support Program Manager on needed changes to client plans.

Education, Designations and Experience:

1. High school diploma.
2. Secondary school education is preferred.
3. CCA Certification is required in Nova Scotia.
4. Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker, Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
5. Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate.
6. Experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children is preferred.

Other:

1. Must have access to a personal vehicle and possess a current driver’s license and proof of insurance.
2. A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
3. A Vulnerable Sector Search or Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
4. Available to work flexible hours.
5. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics.
