Job Summary:

The Personal Support Worker provides personal support and homemaking services to clients and families within the framework of VON policies, procedures, standards. The PSW collaborates with members of the health care team to meet clients' needs, promoting independence and well-being.

This position is eligible for a $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Observe and evaluate clients' or families' home, personal situations, and care plans, recommending changes as needed.
  • Contribute to developing the personal support care plan under the supervision of the Program Manager.
  • Implement changes to the care plan for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report any changes in client or family needs to the supervisor promptly.
  • Perform personal support tasks such as light cleaning, meal preparation, clothing care, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care, including assistance with walking, stairs, bed mobility, eating, dressing, and hygiene, as directed.
  • Assist with bedside care under nurse supervision if required.
  • Provide respite care and support to clients' families, including child care when needed.
  • Organize daily activities and set priorities under supervision.
  • Complete daily call checks and other documentation to ensure service efficiency.
  • Assess communication and relational abilities of clients.
  • Communicate with the health team regarding client needs and report concerns.
  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and VON policies.
  • Follow risk management policies to ensure client safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Maintain frequent communication with the supervisor or Program Manager regarding client plans and relevant information.
Education, Designations, and Experience:
  • High school diploma.
  • Certificate in Home Support Worker, Personal Support Worker, Developmental Services Worker, or Health Care Aide.
  • Nursing students who have completed their first year of Practical Nursing or BScN are eligible.
  • Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) are welcome to apply.
  • Experience in household management and working with elderly, ill individuals, or children.
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve.
  • Adaptability to change and diverse environments.
  • Must have a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check required at employment start.
  • Additional checks like Vulnerable Sector Search or Child Abuse Registry may be required.
  • French language skills are an asset in designated areas.
  • Ability to wear PPE as needed.
