Job Summary:
Personal Support Workers will be responsible for providing companionship, personal care, and health maintenance services to clients in their homes or throughout the community within the framework of VON’s philosophy, policies, standards, and legislation. As a Personal Support Worker, you will work with members of the Healthcare and Personal Support teams to meet the needs of clients in obtaining an optimal level of independence and well-being.
This position is eligible for the $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours spent directly caring for clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Observe and evaluate the client’s or family’s home, personal situation, and care plan to determine if any changes are needed and whether needs have been met. Advise supervisor accordingly.
- Contribute to the development of the personal support care plan under the guidance of the Personal Support Program Manager, based on information from the funder, the Manager, and the client or family.
- Implement changes to the care plan for safety, liability, and financial reasons, under the guidance of the Manager.
- Report any changes in the client’s or family's needs or home situation that require adjustments to the care plan.
- Perform personal support tasks based on client and family needs, including light cleaning, meal preparation, clothing care, shopping, and household safety monitoring.
- Provide personal care as directed, including assistance with walking, stairs, bed transfers, eating, dressing, and hygiene.
- Provide bedside care under the direction of a nurse, when required.
- Offer respite care to clients as needed.
- Support clients’ families by providing child care to enable family relief.
- Organize daily activities and set priorities for personal support and other tasks under supervision.
- Complete daily call checks and other required documentation to ensure efficient service operation.
- Assess communication patterns and the client’s ability to relate.
- Communicate with the health team regarding homemaking, physical, and emotional needs, and inform supervisors of any concerns or changes.
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and VON policies to promote client safety.
- Follow risk management policies and procedures to ensure safety.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
External and Internal Relationships:
- Engage regularly with the supervisor or Program Manager regarding client plans and relevant information.
Education, Designations, and Experience:
- High school diploma; secondary education preferred.
- CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia.
- Certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide required.
- Current Standard First Aid or CPR Level C certificate, if applicable.
- Experience in household management and working with elderly, ill individuals, or children preferred.
Skill Requirements:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and families with respect, empathy, and understanding.
- Good assessment skills and awareness of community resources.
- Ability to work independently or in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to follow directions and adapt to different social and economic environments.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
Other Requirements:
- Access to a personal vehicle, with a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check; Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Check may be required.
- Availability to work flexible hours.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
Work conditions include physical activity such as lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs, with attention to body mechanics.
